Lifter noise

We just purchased a previously owned 2000 ML320 Mercedes; I noticed that when the engine is cold in the morning, there is almost no knocking noise. Once the motor is warm, it almost sounds like a diesel motor. I was told this comes from the “lifter” my question, how serious is this problem, and two, how can this be fixed. Your advice is highly appreciated.

Helmut.

Helmut.

Your engine is under a 10yr/150,000 mile warranty from Mercedes due to the FSS lawsuit, see http://www.paed.uscourts.gov/documents/opinions/03D0139P.pdf for all the details. Also this information might be of some help http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w163-m-class/1343510-engine-noise-after-4-day-shutdown.html ;)

Lifter Noise?

I had a similar problem at 135,000 miles. No noise when started cold but noisey after warming up. Dealer said water pump, fan or fan clutch. Replaced water pump myself. Still have noise under warm engine conditions. Put one end of baseball bat against alternator and other end to my ear. Guess what? It's the alternator bearing.

Just thought I'd share my experience with you. Good luck.

Thank you Jim for your note, after listening to about every part of the motor I find the clicking is most audible when I place the piece of wood against the top of the motor, on the passenger side, second rib from the back. I think I will go with my mechanics advice and do a hot oil engine flush the next time I change oil. Well see what comes out……
