ML270 power loss in Australia

2000 model CDI, 130k, goes fine for a few hundred k's then 80 kph in auto max, engine sounds muffled. Our mechanic clears code -""1740 charge compressor" then all ok until next time. mechanic getting confused as he has talked to several MB "experts", they are saying everything from replace cat converters, replace MAF sensors, to rebuild engine $$$xr!&rr%&$$$! Any thoughts welcome!

No specific ideas but 'charge compressor' is M-B speak for the turbo compressor system. Fault could be air leaks before or after the intercooler, Mass Air Filter bad readings (same system) might also cause similar symptoms. Problem could also be related to boost pressure mismatch vs needed. Good luck!

thanks fourdiesel, investigating it does seem to bring out whole range of possibilities. there's another non-genuine MB service place down the road that want to charge $140 to hook it up to supposed genuine MB software thingo which will apparently provide miracle answer. but it seems there are so many variables its hard to see how it could pinpoint this.

You need to replace the CAT, a simple way to confirm if it's the cat is to remove it from the engine and take it for a squirt.
If i had a dollar for every CAT i have replaced on the 270, i would be very rich!
