air condiotioning:funny smell

My brother has an 07 sprinter that has a smell of old rags when the aiur is turned on. It takes around 30 sec to make the smell, lasts for a little over 1 min, then goes away. Anyone know what causes this, and if there is a remedy.

microbial infestation,in the Evaporator/Heater Core.

Or someone at Dodge has left a nasty old rag in the HVAC system during assembly.

Quick temporary fix: Spray "Oust" brand air sanitizer "Clean Scent" in the Cabin
Air Intake (On the outside of the Vehicle) with the Air Conditioning on /Then with the Heat on.
'Crack the windows to help with Air Flow.

Disclaimer: Don't allow anyone to sit in the Automobile ,Whilst you're Both spraying, with a can in each hand, large volumetric amounts into the Air Intake(s).

My guess is that either something has gotten into the cabin air filter or there is a partial blockage of the condensation drain and he has something growing in there.

Air fresheners may just mask a problem. I would check the filter and then blow out the drain.

If those are both fine then I would next suspect a leak somewhere in the condensation drain that is dripping onto either carpet or insulation and something nasty is growing in that spot. When you first turn on the air the odors are sucked in the intake.

There is a TSB on bad smells from the HVAC on the W164 ML's.
