2001 ml320 start error

My 01 ML 320 has had problems the last two weeks starting. When I leave home it starts just fine, but when it gets to normal operating temp. and I stop somewhere and shut it off it start. The starter turns over fine but it acts like its not firing or getting fuel. If I let it sit for a few minutes it will crank. Yesterday my wife was driving it and it shut off while she was pulling up to an intersection, she said the all the cluster lights came on and it said "start error" in the odometer field. Today on her way to work she was pulling in to her parking space and it did the same thing. After the last two incidents it has started up and will run fine. I'm thinking I may need to replace the fuel filter but I don't want to spend that $95.00 on a hunch. I'm open for suggestions.

+1. Sounds like a classic CPS fault from your description.
