1999 ml 430 dies

We have an ml 430 here that dies out of the blue, coasts over to the side of the road wait a minute or two restart and drive off. It does not matter hot or cold, we replaced the crank sensor several months ago when it had a hard time starting, and just replaced it again as a test for this problem. Attach to the test equipment and no fault codes show up! Any suggestions please? It would die five times in five miles but restart every time after sitting a minute.

When re-starting does the engine have to crank-over a long time?

Poss fuel pump. Have a lot of keys hanging on your key chain ? We had a few that the ignition switches were very sensitive to having a lot of weight on the key chains. Funny but true....

What is the issue with this?

Is it due to the weight, it turns the ignition key?

Or does it fry the switch wiring?

The reason I ask, is because my wife's ML320 ignition switch wiring shorted and it was close to $600 to replace a $30 item...

I think my shop foreman explained it as the weight created just enough "play" in the tumbler to open the circuit...

Thank you for the replies. The car will not restart immediately but if left for a minute or two will instantly restart as if nothing has happened and will drive right off. The keychain thing is a good thought but if the car is tried right away after the stall it just turns over and over and will not restart. We had installed a new fuel filter about ten thousand miles ago but not a pump. I would think that a pump failure would show in a code reading.

This is the same thing our ML was doing for a couple weeks. We were at a point of having the dealer diagnose the problem, because I checked everything I could myself and couldn't find the problem. And the day before we were going to take it in, it died and wouldn't restart. Everything indicated it should run, spark, fuel pressure, ect, but it wouldn't start. The dealer found the short in the ignition switch...

If AdvisorGuy will reply with the recommended fix, it may help with your issue.
