2001 ML320 check engine light

Hi,

I have a 2001 ML320 and check engine light came on. When I try to read it with OBD II scanner, the scanner could not read anything.

The scanner works on my 1996 C280, so the scanner is working.

Is there anything I need to do to make ML320 ODB II work ?

Thank you.

That ML has a system with "later" protocols than the 1996 does. HOW old is the scanner??

the reader does light up. but will not read ML.
the reader is working fine because it reads on my 1996 C280 & 2006 Toyota Sienna.

I thought perhaps ML requires some sort of by pass ?

It should work fine. Nothing special about the ML (there are additional codes and functions but those are on top of the OBD specs, not in place of). Some auto parts stores will do a scan for free. Take it by there and see whether it works and then you'll know whether it is your scanner or your vehicle.

This is assuming that it was a US model.

Yes, it is an US model ML320.

I am in San Jose, CA area, do you know any store will scan for free ?

Thank you.

Autozone and Advanced Auto Parts are chains that do it for free in my area (Southeastern US).

Harbor Freight had one for cheap $40 or so. I bought mine on ebay for about the same money. Sad to say, but if you own a mercedes it is almost a must have tool.
