Coolant Temp Sensor Stuck

I recently replaced the water pump, thermostat, and hoses on a 2000 ML320. In doing so I clumsily broke the collant temp sensor. I pulled the clip from around the sensor, but the sensor is very difficult to remove. I am afraid of pulling on it too hard and breaking off more to the point that I would not be able to get any leverage on it. How is this thing supposed to come out?

Thanks in advance.

As you surmised the sensor should just pull out with the clip removed.
