auto box not changing gear ml320 2001

Hi , i have a 2001 ml320 and the automatic gearbox is stuck in 2nd, i have taken this to a mechanic and he has said i need a new gearbox? any ideas before i pay £4500 , i am mechanicly minded so any suggestions welcome.
