White and Black Batteries?
'99 ML430 230k and running...
Needed a new battery yesterday. Called dealer and was asked whether my orignal was White or Black in color. Was told that later ML's had black batteries that had higher capacities. White battery: $184, Black: $290. The first one I bought through roadside assistance in 2004 cost only $115! Asked the parts guy would I be able to switch over to a black one, since this is my 3rd battery in 8.5 years. Maybe there is something wrong with these white ones? He said he didn't think it was possible. Decided to call Batteries Plus and picked one up for $140.00 with a 3yr/65k mile warranty. What do you guys know about these black batteries? Can I switch mine out? Thanks! P.S. Also found out that as of 1/1/11, roadside assistance is no longer available without regular dealer maintenance! This means spending at least $100 at the dealer every 18 months.

White probably means translucent so you can see the fluid level.
Black probably means AGM construction, i.e. no fluid checking required.
