NEWBIE: I Need Help with a 99 ML430

I'm going to look at a ML430 tomorrow, 130,000 miles, one owner, serviced by MB. The catch, while showing the ML two weeks ago the transmission went into limp mode. It was driven two blocks to a service station to get looked at, their conclusion, it needs the transmission worked on. About half way home (one block) the 430 just stopped moving altogether. Nothing at all, total transmission failure.. I know the people and they never had a problem with the truck. It's mint, not a scratch, it just won't move. What do I look for ? Is that the way MB's transmissions go out ? Is it the transfer case ? How do I tell what's going on and what to look for???
HELP !
