GL axel removal
Is there anyone here that is familiar with the GL 350 with AWD. I am trying to repair a collision loss and need to replace the sub frame. That requires removal of the front drive axels, the l/f seems to have a stub axel that doesnt want to come out like the passenger side. I am retired from MB and am trying to help a friend. Anyone here have access to the star tek network?
Thanks Bill |
I had a co-worker do that job on a lift next to mine. If I recall correctly he had one axle that was difficult to remove because it was bent from the collision. I believe the solution was to apply more force. You should check to see if the housing got bent from the accident. I also remember that there was a special tool for removing the diff from the carrier bearings in the housing. It was a heavy clamping rig that physically spread the housing apart!

My Bad, I re-read my posted question or request for help and discovered I made a slight error, the vehicle is a GLK and not a GL. Only a ton of difference. Thanks again, Bill

Got it
Got it out, the axel seperates from the stub axel just inside the inner cv joint. Take a wood block maybe 2/2 at least 2 ft long and hit it from below next to the oil pan and it will seperate from the stub axel. It is held as before with a tension ring.
