Know anybody with a G500 cabrio?
My wife wants one.....she thinks it's "cute". Then I mentioned the MSRP......"POP"........there goes that idea;) |
Our local landrover dealer has a test track which runs around the dealership. I went for a ride and was almost impressed :) All the tolerances were exact. The guy who took me was telling me things like "this is a 40 degree uphill" or this is "23 degrees side angle." He also said that the Range Rover was the most capable offroader in the world, even better than the G!

Ok.....
Alright guys, this was never a debate over the capability of the G, or the abilities of the Mog, nor the sales hype of the Hummer or any other 4x4. I appreciate the comments, but I need to know if I have a problem with my wifes M. I realize that the diagonal crossing is a mean test for a truck, and I may have exceeded the capability of the systems. If that is the case then I can deal with that. The suspension flexed just fine, and in fact I was amazed at how much travel there is. (Before anyone starts about "you should see the travel on a G", remember I also have a 1952 6x6, that old girl has 24" of suspension travel in STOCK configuration!)
I will try the crossing again in low range to determine if it was a torque issue. There were no system error indicators, so I assume that there were no error codes set. Are the application parameters something that the dealer can alter? Thanks for all the input. (Neat movie) |
Maybe you should take a tech with you to that particular spot.

Mark,
There are some of us (really most of us) who like to go on a little about 4x4s it’s all in the name of fun. Plus, these threads almost always take on a life of their own, so to speak. Anyway, my question are as follows: 1) Were all tires spinning when this happened? 2) How long did you give the ML to “figure out” how to solve problem on its own? 3) What’s the condition of the tires? 4) About how soft was the ground? 5) You said you revved it up to an indicated 10 MPH. For how long? Also, any chance you can show us a pix? Thanks |
Did you have ESP turned off? (I'm stabbing in the dark)

I think the '98s didn't have ESP...but don't remember
|
Mark, I'll bet it works in low.
I doubt the parameters are able to be altered. We need an MB tech for a definate answer though. Let us know what happens, and you should see the suspension travel on my Unimog:D |
Oh yeah, '98 no ESP. Gilly is laughing his head off reading this :)

Glad I decided to "visit" the 4-wheel area of this forum....you folks are fun!!
|
I remember reading some place that the threshold for 4ETS were set based on the max typical wheel spin over time that would be expected. This threshold takes into account uneven tire wear, expected slippage on wet roads and even travel in mud/gravel. You can temporarily enable 4ETS just by turning a corner sharply. The point being it doesn’t take much to activate torque transfer on the system. 3 mph wheel spin difference isn’t much when you have at least 25% of engine torque going to each wheel. And on the '98s the torque split was 50/50 as opposed to I think 35/65 on later models.

Howdy el presidente
Glad to have you. Maybe you might catch the off-road bug:) I am going to stick my neck out on this one but maybe the 320GE has a cabrio and for a lot less money. G-Man will be able to tell you. |
There is one G500 power top cabriolet for sale right now. It is either new or slightly used, I did not ask. It is at Europa in Santa Fe, you can expect to nudge six figures trying to buy that one. It is very rare and unlikely MBUSA will ever import more.
There are 320 and 300 cabs, they are very rare as well. The reasonably priced ones are through Keiser Motors in San Jose. www.keisermotors.com Norm is a good guy to deal with. Kuan, I have been on Land Rovers track in Mpls(Edina?), it is a serious joke compared to what Europa has for the G in New Mexico. Maybe we should show up in my G and your ML and show those Rover boys how it is done. I recall the salesman explaining to me how I could reasonably expect the headgasket to blow if I bought a Discovery. Excellent sales pitch! The only part of the track remotely impressive was the side angle hill, of course it comes no where near the Gs 54% capability. |
Love it!
