has anyone install the gps system in their ML??
I was looking at clairparts.com and I saw that they have a GPS navigation system for the ML for 1399.95 and the MCS navigation Module for 1555.
Does anyone know which one is needed to install GPS. I have a 2000 and I already have the 4" monitor. blau |
Herr Blau:
I assume what you need is the MCS Nav system. I don't know what they mean by the "GPS Nav system", maybe they mean the 98-99 pod-type system where the cd-rom reader goes under the passengers seat? I am working with a fellow with the same basic question about his 2002 on the forum here. Your 2000 does not have the GPS antenna already installed, but the hole and wiring is all in place and the antenna should come with it. If you have a factory phone, then you do have an antenna, unsure if it's got a GPS antenna integrated or not. The cd-rom driver in the MCS unit is a drop-in, pretty easy but the MCS has to be removed. Also the dealer will need to program the MCS internal version coding for the Nav. You need to make sure the unit is supplied with a Nav disc for your area. Let me know if you have further questions. Gilly |
We purchased a 2002 ML32 yesterday and it does not have the MCS navigation yet.
What parts will I require to install the NAV into the vehicle? It does not have the in-dash CD player or TeleAid either. It is a Canadian vehicle. Would it be possible to install the DVD based system or can only the CD based system be installed? Which would be better? |
Bora:
The DVD would be better from what I've heard, at least for the US. I am unaware of how many CD-ROM's would be required to cover Canada. In the US only 1 DVD is required for the whole country, or so I've heard. I am unsure if a DVD nav system is offered yet by MB for the MCS unit, or if it would work, or if discs (CD ROM or DVD) are available for Canada, sorry I can't be of more help on this. The Nav system cannot be installed along with the in-dash CD player, they occupy the same spot, so it's one or the other. As a minimum you would need the drop-in nav unit that goes into the MCS unit. If there is no antenna at the back of the roof (look just ahead of the top of the tailgate in the center) then you will need the antenna for the cell phone/gps system, and you may also need to install an antenna splitter which would go under the passengers seat. A Canadian dealer I am sure would be more familiar with equipping your ML with the sysytem and can also advise about the Nav system best for you and the availablity of these. Gilly |
Thanks for the quick reply. Canada is currently on 1 CD, so DVD would hopefully have more features.
No antenna at all, but hopefully is prewired. I will speak to the dealer when we pick it up on Wednesday. |
