Howdy Darryl,
It seems the seller buys things from ebay Europe then sells them on ebay U.S. At the $4,000 price almost any running Mog would be a good price. With the 4 cylinder diesel the term " Mog Slow" takes on a new meaning A 404 with a six cylinder diesel conversion is a lot better.

Why would the seller have so few photos? Kinda odd isn't it?

Frank, your on the mark with your comment regarding the four banger diesel. Even with the six cylinder there would be a heck of a lot of rpm's out of the motor to get things up to speed. I know people have done the conversions and I am curious to hear what the outcome is like, both short term and long term(ie longevity of the engine).

Howdy Greg,
Just talking about Mercedes diesels the ones that are most likely to be used in the 404 are the OM 352 and the OM 615,616,617. The OM 352 is in the 406/616. I have read about people thinking about doing the swap into the 404 but I don't know if it has been done. I think "fit" is the thing.( No shoehorn big enough) The 617 has a better chance of fitting since it is a 5 cylinder engine. I haven't paid that much attention to swaps but I think that one has been done.

Hey Frank!!

I wonder if the 352 would have sufficient rpm's? Max rpm is around 2800 where the 404 is doing 4000rpm at 90Km/h and maximum rpm's at 5500. Might mean a really slow 404!

I am not too sure what the max rpm's are for the 617 but guys are using them for conversions. I just wonder about how long the engine will last if it gets constantly pinned and pushing a heavy load. It is a testiment to the strenght of the 617 engine that they last any lenght of time.

But in the end everyone does what they want for their own reasons so what the HECK!!

Howdy Greg,
One person said the 617 performance would be about the same as the gasser so the swap would be for the sake of just having a diesel. It would be screaming wouldn't it?¿ Like you say "what the heck" When my 404 gets done being restored it will be stockexcept for the inside of the Koffer which will be set up for camping/expedition.

The 617A is a nice conversion. (turbo motor) The Mog I bought had this done prior to my purchase. Which is why I bought it. I can push it faster than the tranny should be going with out too much problem. I have not driven a regular 404 but Im told I should climb upgrades much easier than them.
