Which MB SUV’s to Avoid
 

My wife has an Expedition that she had when we met several years ago. It’s moving toward time to replace it and she wants to consider some Benz products. I am thinking a few years old and not sure if an M or GL will be better for her, maybe even a G, but I want to know which ones might have an Achilles heel that would make them ones to avoid.

The wifes RWD 14 GLK350 is at 163,xxx miles with only routine maintenance and I don't see any reason why it won't make it to 300k. I've been pretty impressed with it. IIRC they also were available with the diesel. You may want something bigger though if you are getting out of an Expedition.

An M, GL and G are three completely different vehicles.

Sounds like your criteria is to buy a Mercedes-Benz for the sake of saying you have one opposed to what your needs are such as hauling, large family, off roading, etc.

Why not another Ford?

The Expedition is too big and Both of us like driving an MB. They are not as different from other cars out there as they used to be, but nothing drives like a Benz.

I find it quite interesting that someone can draw such a conclusion without even meeting or knowing us. She has had MB’s before and I have had almost nothing else for the last 43 years.

Just so you know, driving a G is hard work compared to a GLK. The G is by far my least favorite MB and I drive a variety of them every working day....

I have had a 2003 ML320 a 11 ML350 and now have a GLK 350. I had the first ML for 10 years and put 110K miles on it. It was almost completely trouble free needing a water pump and crank position sensor at 110K and the low range motor needed to be cleaned and greased (mostly due to non use) at 140K. It was sold to a friend and still is running with only routine maintenance, now at 220K. The 2011 ML was a more refined vehicle, quieter and more comfortable but thirsty (16-20mpg) they both were used for towing and neither seemed to be taxed with the extra load. Gas mileage dropped to 9-11 for both towing up to 7000 pounds with the 11. We sold the ML350 to a family member and it is still running strong with no significant problems. We got the GLK because we wanted a smaller vehicle. It is by far the most fun to drive for an SUV it has 300 hp
and takes off like a rocket. Handling is a little like our 2000 C230 sport with a bit of a top heavy feeling. The rear seat room and cargo capacity in the GLK is lacking but it is only the two of us now so that is fine. Mileage is in the 24-30 range.

I have owned both a 2012 ML 350 and a 2010 GLK 350. I much prefer the ML. I understand the early ML models built in Alabama are not the best choice.

I like the wifes '14 GLK a lot and I don't like SUVs. I think, with proper maintenance:) it will easily go 300k+ miles. Only wear I'm seeing is on the door side of the drivers seat and I've seen that on other ppls GLK. The seats in the 95 E300 show absolutely no wear at 290k miles.

We also own 2014 GLK350 with about 55K miles on it. Love it, its quick, handles well for a SUV and is cute (the reason the wife had to have it). The only small complaint is fuel mileage, in the mid 20s most of the time. More if you drive freeway miles.

We picked this one up Nov 2017 with about 80k miles on it.

Recommend GLE which used to be the ML, get a gas only
