Does anyone knows when was the autolock feature available for ML's. Or if it is a standard feature (hidden feature sort-of, like the integrated fog-lights).
thanks for any pointers....

I believe it was 2000 model year. The description on how to do it is in the 2000 owners manual, only doubt I have is 1999, but there is nothing in my 1999 presentation guide (or 2000 presentation guide) about it. i don't have a1999 owners manual to check here at home, otherwise i could be a little more sure.

Thanks Gilly, I found the owner of a '99 who says he has it and he was told it was option 16 on the car's system. I was at the dealer and they said it was not available for mine ('98), but I'll try again now that I know the option number. I hope it is available in the '98's. I'll keep you posted with what I find out...thanks again

I had it when my ML was new, but was later told that the option wasn't really supposed to be enabled on the 99 MLs. All sorts of reports of unintended locking occurred (leave ML running at car wash, close doors, locks engage, etc.).
Unintentional locking occured twice for me...once at home, and the other at the service entrance at the dealership. They had disabled it since then.

this is the moving autolock function, the one that locks the doors when you drive over 9 mph. My ML will lock itself after some time by itself, although it works when ever it wants to and not every time I leave it unlocked, for some reason.

OK, 2 different features being discussed here. i don't think the "autolock" (when moving) was there until 2000.
The "auto relocking" I believe was there since 98. The "auto relocking" is when you come up to the truck and it's locked, then you unlock it, but don't open the door. If a door is not opened for a short time period, the doors will relock themselves. That feature I do believe can be disabled using SDS, not on your own. Gilly

I am referring to the "moving" autolock function that was indeed operational when I purchased my ML in Nov. 98, but disabled by the dealer a few months later.
When they disabled that feature, I never had problems with the "phantom" locking either...
