That's the thing between the door hinges that controls how far the door opens and gives the opening of the door a little drag to keep it from damaging the hinges by flying open too fast.
Most of it is inside the door, but a lever sticks out and attaches to the body. Gilly

Yes, that's it. On the ML it's black plastic.
I have heard of owners saying they have had lot's of check-strap problems on ML's, we have had very few. Gilly
