ML320 fuel filter update
 

The dealer locally has provided me with the new " updated fuel filter/pressure regulator and three plastic lines but no instruction. Has anyone done this change-over before? It looks like you would need to access the fuel pump to connect the new lines. As usual your help is greatly appreciated. The knowledge available on this site is the best out there. I wish some BMW group would try something similar. The local dealer is lost in space. Thanks to all Rocket

If approched correctly the dealer is supposed to do that up-date for FREE! Service bulletin T-SI-47.10/13 April 2001
Does require removal of drivers side of rear seat & opening the cover for the fuel pump.

The 2 shorter lines directly replace the present lines on the truck.
The larger U shaped line plugs into the fuel filter outlet nipple, then curves around the back side of the filter, then towards the front of the truck and plugs into the fuel supply line that runs forward to the engine. Be careful when you clamp the filter to the frame bracket that you don't catch this long line between the clamp and filter.

What do you mean "approach correctly?" I was told by my dealer that I need to upgrade the filter couple of months ago, and they quoted me a few hundred dollars to have it done. I do not remember the exact amount. If they are supposed to do it for free, then I would like to know that. Any help will be appreciated!!

My service advisor has helped me answer policy type questions like this. I will ask him on Monday on what the policy is supposed to be on the filter update for vehicle that are out of warranty and need this done.

Sure I can. I know it's needed on the 98s and 99s, I'd venture to say all 2000s as well, and the intro for the new filter was sometime in 2001. I'll have to check though, could have been in 2000, no earlier than that though.

ML430 up to A 265965
ML55 up to A 266484

Any built after these VIN's are OK.

Bulletin reads:
Please perform this retrofit procedure on all vehices within the effective serial number range table on page 2, at the vehicles next service visit.

What we have been instructed to do (in this region) is to replace the filters free of charge to the original owners only, at the recommended service interval only (60,000 or 4 years). They may have a different policy in different regions.

Gilly, thanks for the detailed information on the update, I'm sure that I'll see many of these updates needing to be done in the near future. Its great to have such a tool as this web-site available and I hope that it grows and prospers. As I said in my original post, I sure wish that a BMW site like it was out there. I have iATN at work and its okay but you get replies from all over the world and you really have to weed out the junk. Thanks again, Rick
