Question on OEM side steps

I have the OEM side steps for my 2003 ML320. I have instructions for them. However, the instructions say to modify the underride stone shields. However it does not show the type of modification. Does anyone have instructions that define that mod. I assume I need to cut them expecially the rear one. Also, does anyone have these side steps that could take a picture of the brackets as they are mounted. Appreciate any help in advance. Either post or e-mail at clarkb@speakeasy.org.
