Steering Wheel Removal Instuctions
 

I am getting ready to exchange my steering wheel on a 2000 ML 430.

Any advice on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

I have a '98 ML320. I assume yours is similar, but can't say for sure. First make sure the wheel is in the straight ahead position before you start. There are two Torx head screws on the back side of the wheel. You need a Torx screwdriver to get at them; a socket is too wide as the scres are buried pretty deep. Don't remember what size, T27 or T30 maybe? After you remove these screws take the airbag off and you will see the nut that holds the wheel to the column. I believe it's a 24mm nut. I had to replace a defective combination (turn signal) switch is why I know this.

I recall the fasteners being T25's. You will find out one way or the other.

When trying to remove the big nut that holds on the steering wheel you need to hold the steering wheel to keep it from moving. Don't use the steering lock to do this. This will generate steering lock problems down the line. Instead, find a long board (1"x6"x5' or so) that you can thread through spokes. Have an assistant hold the wheel steady with the board then use a long breaker bar on the nut. It is held on with blue locktite.
