-   -   G-Wagen (460): trouble shifting betrween GA & SA (http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=7289)

I'm a new owner of a '84 280GE/Automatic (LWB), and I'm finding a little trouble shifting between GA (4WD-low) and SA (4WD-high). It often gets "stuck" in the in-between ("neutral") position and I can't budge it unless I get out and roll it a couple of feet.
[BTW, I have no troube between SA and S (2WD).]
I think I'm following the owner's manual's directions correctly: i.e., trying this with the transmission in neutral and the car stationary. But is this the right technique? Or am I supposed to do this while I'm in gear (transmission in "Drive") and the vehicle rolling along.
Any advice on "finessing" this transfer case shifter correctly? In advance, thank you.

What you can do is to shift as the book sais as long as it will work. When it does not, shift the transmission into neutral and see if that helps. If not, shift into drive and back into neutral, then wait a few seconds and try the transfer case again. (this works on mine)

I know this is a old post, however, the easiest way to shift between GA & SA is when the vehicle is moving. Even if it is very slow or crawling. Shift tranny in D, roll slighty, then shift in neutral (do not brake!) and shift your transfercase while the vehicle is rolling. If you have to shift in the Park position just force it. You will not break anything.

Is this Torsten?

Yes, it's a very old post -- about a year old. And I've learned the technique -- I do exactly as you described, and it works great.
But Hi -- you signed your message T. Rhode -- is this Torsten? The sales supervisor at GWagen? Or the Torsten who lives up in New York State (I know of TWO "Torsten Rhodes" who are on Mercedes lists -- how's that for coincidence?).
Just thought I'd say hello.
