Replacing Brake Light Globe ?
 

This is a simple procedure on every other car I have owned except for my ML320.

Usually you can access the new globe through the interior of the car.

The ML has a solid plastic panel all along the side of the rear - can this be taken off to replace the brake globe ?

What do you mean by "brake light globe"? If you mean the bulb fir the center stoplight, the very top part of the tailgate panel removes seperately from the rest of the panel, just press in on the marked area along the sides and tilt the seperate panel all the way back, then it can be removed. 1 plastic tab allows the reflector and socket to be removed and the bulb can then be replaced.

And if you mean one of the regular tail light globes, then the rear light assemblies are easily removed by using the 2 plastic type screws on the light housing which you will see when you open the tailgate.

Should take about 10 minutes max.

I love Melbourne too but am pretty biased (as probably most people are about their home town).
Sydney and the Cairns are good places to visit but for livability Melbourne wins by far.

I still haven't quite worked out how to replace the brake light globe.
I have undone the 2 plastic screws but can't dislodge the light. It appears to get caught on the front bottom corner like it's clipped in.
Should I just force it ? or is there a trick to removing it ?

Yes, there is a fastener holding the front "wedge" shape in place. Not really a clip, it's best described as a ball and socket. Yes, just pull straight back on it as best you can, I've never had one break. I assume you have moderate temps down there, that'll help. The action is best described as "jerking" it out, just give a forceful tug on it and it'll "POP" out.

Be careful reinstalling it, broke mine and had to replace the plastic socket. ;)
