Need New Trans for 2000 ML320

The check engine light is now on all the time. The trans does not shift into third without the engine reving and then engaging after letting up on the gas. The dealer has no explanation for this other than "YOU NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION." How many models and what year range is this transmission used? The dealer wants about $3000 to do the job. Is that reasonable? We have called MBUSA and they are little if any help. The ML has been replaced and needs to be repaired so it can be sold.

Has anyone had simular experience with their ML or transmission?

You might want to try a different dealer if possible. These Mercedes service departments are not created equal. Been there done that with a couple transmission problems. Mine wanted to go into the limp home mode (2nd gear only) a couple times for no good reason. Good luck. ;)

Azinn - so how did you fix your transmission

it blows my mind the ML320 has a lifetime transmission with no dip stick, no scheduled maintenance.

I would like to know the specifics of WHY they think it needs a tranny. ML transfer case shift motor failures could cause the same problem, bad control module, can failure, valve body electrics, air mass sensor, I could go on. If there is no metal in the pan, and doesn't make horrible noises, chances are it can be fixed. Get the manager involved. You may just have a noob working on it. Not his fault, he doesn't know any better yet.

This is a joke, right?
You have most likely a bad Mass Air Flow sensor.
This causes all sorts of havoc with shifting when bad.
Had EXACT same symptoms on an E320.

Don't even bother going back to the same dealer.
Just find another dealer.

I went straight to the service manager when this started. This guy looks up to nobs he's such loser. If anyone in the Denver area reads this stay away from Murry Motors service. Better yet go to any of the other dealers and stay away from Murry Motors completely.

With this said and off my chest, Thank you roadsession and sdanville for the mass air flow sensor tip and sdanville's for your additional tips. My independent mechanic is getting the diognostic equipment for the new vehicles and may have it in so I'll be calling him in the morning. If its not in I'll be checking the other Denver dealer's service managers.

I'd like to know what happened on your transmission. thanks.

sdanville

The dealer (Murray) called a couple weeks ago and told us they had a factory tech coming in to look at the transmission problem and picked it up 4-1 and dropped off a brand new C240 AWD and we haven't heard much since except the light is still on with a new transmission and 2nd and 3rd gear was shot in the old one.

Maybe we'll just keep the C240 untill our lease on the ML320 is up.

I'll let you know what happens.

I didn't see the mileage listed in this posting thread. I'm curious as to the mileage as I also have a 2000 ML320.

Thanks,
