Rockers

I've owned a '99 ML 430 for the last 2 years, and it currently has 93,000 miles. I took it to the dealer 2 weeks ago for a new brake light switch and to replace the harmonic balancer which was starting to come off. I asked them listen to a "lifter noise at start-up, and they informed me it needed rockers/ bridges and brackets. It was all covered by the warranty. Upon checking service records we discovered it had the same rocker arm repair done at 50,000 miles by the previous owner. I haven't heard of this problem before with this engine and wanted to know what your thoughts are.
