YAW rate senson 99 320ml

ml320, my BAS/ESP light came on and they ran a diagnostic and got code for yaw rate sensor. What the heck is this? They said "need new yaw rate sensor at minimum, at some point in future\may need steering angle sensor, had intermittent code before for this sensor". What does this mean? Should I go ahead and have it replaced? I have little confadence in this shop.
Also the cat. converter has now gone bad, is this maybe related? Oh and one more bit of info, this all started when one day my battery was dead, I jumped it, took it in and test said it was bad. They replaced the battery and when I drove away the BAS/ESP light was on, and now the converter is bad

:confused::(

I read your other post also. How many miles on it? The cat may be covered under the emission warranty, whether you bought it new or not. I've never seen one with an actual hole "rotted" or rusted out of the cat, it's made out of stainless steel. I have seen them crack apart on a weld though on the ML's. I've never replaced one without needing to remove the torsion spring though, it's not that bad to remove the torsion spring.

On the ESP/BAS light,if this happened right after a battery replacement, they possibly didn't know that the steering angle sensor needs to be initialized. If the light is still on, try this:
Go out and start the truck, then start turning the steering wheel all the way to the left, then all the way to the right, and do this about 2 or 3 times in each direction and see if the light goes off then.....

I bought the car used and it had been in Florida until now. The shop here in VA said they thougt that because of the salt air it may have happened. The car has 91K on it so not sure that would be covered.
On the other issue of BAS/ESP, I was told to try the same thing, so it would reset the somethinaruther, and it works fine until I turn off the car. But when I go to turn it on again it is on,(but only some of the time).

Possibly the steering angle sensor, aka "the somethingeruther" may no be recalibrated properly. What I would try is disconnecting the negative post on the battery, then reconnect it, start the truck and then right away do the initiallization routine I described previously.

In regards to the cat, again I don't believe there is an actual hole in it, more than likely it cracked along a weld, I have seen this before, nothing to do with salt air. More than likely the truck was run on the highway and then went through a car wash with an underbody flush, or went through a puddle of water, which made a weld crack on the outer covering on the cat.

Gilly, Are there other things that will need to be reset , like the radio, if I do this?

Gilly 03-08-2004 05:25 PM

Yeah, the only other thing you'd really need to worry about is the radio code.

If I have the code, can I reset it?

Absolutely, the instructions for entering the radio code is in the radio operators book.
