Are you installing a hitch on a car that didn't have one, or looking for existing trailer connector on a car with factory hitch? Factory hitch connector should be under rear bumper on the left.

I'm putting a hitch on the vehicle for the first time. I found the connector. had to cut away a piece of plastic/insulation to expose the connector, but finally found it. apparently, some vehicles dont have this extra piece of insulation?

Must not, mine was easy to find with the panel removed.
