Good Service Experience, but...

I had Hatch & Sons service my E300 Turbo Diesel's "722.6 lifetime" transmission last month and they did a good job. The underside of the car was left clean enough to eat off of and the car drove great afterwards.

The only impression about them I have which is negative is I think they have the "...if you have to ask how much it costs you can't afford it..." attitude.

Here's why I say this; when they serviced my car they noticed some other leaks. One was a fuel leak and one was an oil leak. Both minor in nature but we agreed they should be resolved. I asked Ed, the service manager I dealt with to provide an estimate to fix them both on a future visit. He agreed and said he would call me within a day or so with the price. A week went by and no call so I called and left a voicemail for Ed to follow-up and asked for a call back. I waited another week and heard nothing. Finally, I called and spoke with another gentleman when Ed was again unavailable and explained what had happened told him that I assumed from the lack of follow-up that, that for some reason, they don't want to work for me again.

I said if that assumption is incorrect please have Ed call me back and let me know but for now I have had the leaks repaired elsewhere as I didn't like driving around for 3 weeks with leaks. Nobody ever called back in response to this last call. The only thing I can take from this is that they have enough customers who don't ask "how much will it cost to...?" and don't really want any that do. That's certainly their prerogative, just as it is mine to find a shop who caters to someone who actually cares how much it costs.

But they do good work, just costly ($370 for transmission service plus the replaced a leaky seal in the Transmission when they did it).

My $0.02.

Hatch is best

I service both of my 210s at Hatch. I drive almost 100 miles even for an oil change. They do great work and notice things that most shops dont.

For the avoid list, Holloway (the only franchise dealer in NH) made serious mistakes with both of my cars that cost me extra repairs, months of agony, and never admitted that they made a mistake. Holloway gave me back my 97 after glow plug service which never leaked before leaking a half gallon a day of diesel. The same week, they botched a vaccum repair in the 96 and refused to do anything other than attempt to charge me more to fix what they broke.

'69 280s PPI in Boston

I've stumbled on a great looking '69 280s near my house. The car has 75k, rebuilt motor, recent paint, tons of receipts and a pretty believable story from the seller. I can’t look at this beautiful car objectively and I called Hatch’s and was told they aren’t booking any appointments on older cars at the moment. Any suggestions from 108 owners near Boston? What's the value for a clean, but not show condition 280s?

Thanks,
Christian J

AAAA+ Experience in MA

Recently had my 560SL serviced at John's Foreign Car Service in Wakefield, MA which involved some problem solving. I was totally satisfied with their professionalism, knowledge, quality of work and fairness in cost. I dealt with Mike, and knew from the start that he cared about what he does. The results of his attitude shows in his work.
I will continue to use this shop and have no reservations in suggesting others do so also.

Regards,
George L.

Unfortunately, Hatch & Son is no longer. My '62 Fintail had its idler arm bushing go out on a trip from Hartford to Boston this past weekend. When I called them this morning to arrange a time to bring it in for repair they told me that they were closing their shop on June 19th due to the sale of their business to Heritage Motor Werks, a Bentley dealer. All their finely restored cars have been sold and they will no longer be doing vintage repair work!! A big loss to us vintage enthusiasts. Just must be more money to be made in selling and servicing new MB and Bentley's . . . .

From the MA State Emissions/Inspections site, I learned they're at 31 New Salem St., Wakefield (781) 246-0959. I've found some similar comments about John's, and am hoping they hold true - taking my new-to-me '95 E320 wagon up there for some service tomorrow. I'll post results when I pick up the car later this week. Maybe if I offer to build them a Web site (since I couldn't find one) so people find them, they'll give me a discount.

A-ok!

Just picked up the Wagon from John's - good service all around. A rear wheel bearing went, and they charged a fair rate (especially for Boston). I even got a ride from the Commuter Rail station to the garage to pick the car up. Good stuff.

Previously, I posted that this guy was rude, tried to prove that I was lying.

In addition, I found that this guy works with some mechanics to rob customers’ money.

They recorded that I needed new A/C compressor and estimated the cost to be $1400. (They gave this estimate at my second visit there due to A/C problem.).

Just because of the rudeness of Bill Roust, I declined the job and went to other dealer.

At other MB dealer, the A/C was repaired without replacing the compressor at much lower price - they replaced some wiring -. After the repair, the A/C worked well for the whole summer.

Avoid Bill Roust, Chambers Motorcars, Somerville, MA, USA.
