Painting Side panels

I've been thinking about doing this for a while. I really dislike the 2 tone paint scheme on my W126. it is Gold (of champane?) with dark grey side panels ( and bumpers). So i was thinking maybe i could take apart the side panels, sand them down, put down some primer and paint them gold.

Has anyone done this by themself? i wanted to use Tamiya model paint because i heard they are very high quality and dries fast, with good texture. i believe they are acylic. also i would have to put down a clear coat. can anyone comment on this procedure? i don't really have any paint experience other than model painting.

I'm thinking about painting my panels and bumper covers black or dark charcoal. I'd better get to it because my next class starts on Aug. 19th. The GWS Wash. DC picnic is on the 22nd.
