Just got highspeed internet-mixed feelings
I finally took the plunge and got highspeed internet. I also switched over to digital phone because I hated Southwestern Bell so much. Now I have two phone companies to hate and I'm running out of options. First off, they told me when I signed up for this like a month ago that the digital phone line would be compatible with my fax and answering machine. It isn't. They're supposed to get back to me on that one, but I'm not optiomistic. Secondly, they told me my PC couldn't support an ethernet card, and while the guy was installing it after I waited five hours for them to get here, I was busy doing something else and not paying particular attention. I later realized that it does. Third, I'm alreeady having kinks with the phoneline, like people can't hear me when I'm talking.
Highspeed internet is OK, I'm not finding it all that useful at home. Other than quickly downloading this site and a few others, it doesn't seem worth it. I don't care if I wait for downloads, either, the few that I need, anyway. It seemed cool when I signed up for it and it was a good deal, but its already more a PIA than AOL ever was. |

You can't get it everywhere, but cable modem is the only way to go.

Might try cable internet if it's in your area. My brother has it, and loves it.
LOL What he said.

It's just a nomenclature matter, but what do you mean by "highspeed internet?" Is it DSL through telephone lines or the cache/compression systems being marketed by NetZero and other ISP providers?

Its cable internet. I should have clarified, as my more tech saavy friends are informing me of all the differences. I'm warming up to it, but we'll see. I've been particularly "tech-negative" lately.

I'm confused. What does cable Internet have to do with phone lines?

Yes, although there is still a "phone line", its called digital phone and is different somehow. the relevant difference for me was the price, but now that I've discovered it doesn't work with a fax I may dump it. I just went for the whole package is all, the phone line is not actually the cable.

Do you have a firewall / router? You could plug the cable modem into the router, then plug your computer(s) to the router. This'll let you share your 'net connection, and will also help protect your computer(s). We've got RoadRunner broadband, and the number of port scans we get each day is almost astounding. You can buy a good firewalling router for $50 or so, or else set up a dedicated cheapie computer (my preference). Sorry to read about your phone problems. We got the spa^H^H^H uhh, advertisements, for digital phone service. I didn't sign up due to the high prices and the idea of having all our eggs in one basket. Have you checked out http://www.dslreports.com ? They cover cable as well as DSL, and have lots of information and reviews available. Great site. |
