How about some car talk?
I am in my mid 30's and I have had 8 different cars so far in my life.
That's an average of a new car every 2.5 years. Although I have had my current MB for 6. Assuming I will live to 80, it is possible that I will have another 17 or so cars before I go. Just wondering how many more cars you think you will have before you go upstairs. 20? 10?, 5?, 1?, 0? Please state your reasoning. |

This is pretty simple -- I haven't owned that many.
I tend to drive my cars for years and years before trading them, so I have only owned the following
1982 Ford Escort (traded in 1991) 1991 Mazda Protege (drove until an insane teenager totalled it while parked) 1998 Ford Contour SE (still have it) 2001 Subaru Outback wagon (still have it) But... I am on the market for a W123 or W126 M-B diesel. -- Bokonon |

Great list of cars but I was more thinking along the lines of how many more do you think you will buy in the future. I know that it will be hard to know but you can always guess.
For example: I think I will need several cars each with the following purpose, a daily driver, sports (fun) car, truck/SUV, and a family/sedan/mini van. Although you could have 1 car that will function for more than 1 purpose. I average about 20,000 miles per year. Multiply this by how many years I have left on this planet and I will be driving about 880,000 miles more. I drive mostly highway miles and am pretty easy on cars. I think I can drive a car at least 100,000 miles conservatively and even more if I go diesel. Since I only have 1 car at this time, I will be buying about 8 more cars in the future. The reason I ask this is as I get older I realize that money will be better spend on appreciating assets. I guess I am getting tired of being marketed to and manipulated into buying things every few years when we don't have to. I know many of you have the ability to just buy anything new but I think you get more satisfaction from saving each dollar for something more worth while than a car. |

Hmm
I run about 20,000 miles in a year... if I can get say five to eight years out of every vehicle, and if I drive until I'm 95 like Granny did, well, 95-32=63 years of driving still to go. Eight years per car is eight more vehicles. Five years per car is twelve more vehicles. Throw in a few recreational/part time vehicles, and the occasional shorter-turnaround car, and I'll guess I'll own twelve or fifteen more cars in my lifetime, which is kind of depressing.
In the past sixteen years, this is what I've had: 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, a boxy clunker I drove in high school, then gave to my stepbrother when I inherited a... 1988 Buick LeSabre custom from my dad, which I loved right up until I totalled it at 105,000 miles. Then I financed a car for the first time, a 199(4?) Nissan Stanza, which I sold shortly after falling in love with a 199(6?) Mazda Miata, which I drove until 2001, along with a 1998 Nissan Maxima, which went to the ex-husband in the divorce. I sold the Miata to get a 2000 Saturn SC2. I just recently sold this, although not until having an early midlife crisis and buying a 2003 Yamaha V-Star Classic light cruiser (do motorcycles count?), and then bought a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee from my dad. I used some of the Saturn proceeds to buy my 1985 MB 300D-T. Last edited by webwench; 09-01-2004 at 03:13 PM. |

Hey Kirk,
I have a 98 Camry myself, a 4 banger, and I have to say it is the best car, in terms of reliability and cost effectiveness that I have ever purchased. To answer the original question, I am up around 70 cars, which is way too many...

Right now I have a family car, 1986 300SDL, a sport/fun car 1994 BMW 325i Convt and a winter car/truck 1995 Toyota 4runner Limited plus 2 dirt bikes (Honda) a Suzuki RF900R motorcycle (when I gets the need for speed!) a utility trailer and a couple of electric scooters.
In the future I forsee a mid 90's Lexus SC Coupe, a big Lexus sedan, a hybrid Lexus RX400H (notice a pattern here?) a W140 Mercedes, either sedan or coupe, some kind of mid 90's SL, a Pantera, maybe an M3 Cabrio, a Z8, a mid 60's to 76 Cadillac Fleetwood , a Vixen (10 bonus points to those of you that know what it is) one of those suicide door Thunderbirds from the 60's and a Crown Victoria Wagon with wood on the sides! |

Howdy All,
I might get 3 more cars because at 53 I just won't need many. I'm hopeing that my next one will be the Jeep Liberty diesel.

I've had a 300CD and now I got a 300CE, very diverse!
If things go my way, I'll only have a few more cars, an XKE, 190SL, 600SEL, GTV6 and a 6.9. Maybe a few other things thrown in, like a replica Lancia 037 and Corrado, Opel Manta B, Formula 400 Firebird cars I can mess with and play around in, but nothing I would keep. And I'll never sell my CE either, I got plans for it. Are you speaking of the TVR vixen, LK1? Nice, i want to drive one real bad, never been in a real light car. |
