Ever been stung by a scorpion?
My new house has a few interesting guests -- Bark Scorpions. I've found 5 in two months. Sooner or later I'm probably going to get nailed.

Yeah, camping in AZ, for one! ^&%$&^%#$% state tried to kill me.
Also in MX, TX, AL, GA, and LA. Shoot, I've been stung by those ba$tards all over the place, but mostly on the lower leg, foot, or hand. When I was a boy we rented a house in Corpus Christi, TX (Dad was USN) that my folks called "Scorpion Nest". Got stung there on the butt sitting on the commode. Talk about discommodious. |

I used to play with some big black ones when I was a kid (never stung), but these bark scorpions seem to merit a whole different level of respect. I've read that more deaths in the U.S. have been attributed to bark scorpions in the last 100 years than all snake bites combined. None since AZ State U developed an anti-venom.
I bet you still take an occasional peek before you have a seat, don't you? Last edited by GermanStar; 09-10-2004 at 11:05 PM. |

I got stung by one exactly like that one in Oklahoma while camping at the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. It was emergency room time. It not only hurt like living torture, like a hot poker permentantly shoved into your skin, I vomited for two days straight, and on top of that the bite got infected and I spent a week in the hospital with IVs shooting straight antibiotics into me. One bite itself is not bad enough to kill you, but those critters are crawling around in places full of the worst germs. From my experience, the number one habit to get into is checking your shoes. Your shoe looks exactly like a scorpion's idea of a dream house. I was lucky - it only bit me once, before I had the old sneaker tied. Some people get their shoe all the way on and then that mofu stings the living **** out of them.

Yup -- that had to be a bark scorpion. No other U.S. species could have caused that much grief from what I've read. I do give each shoe a solid thump before inserting foot. My biggest fear is that I'll step on one some day in my bare feet.
Hospitalized for a week -- jeezus! Last edited by GermanStar; 09-10-2004 at 11:16 PM. |

Yes - they shot me up with atropine after I got bit, and the actual affects of the bite went away in about 48 hrs. I returned to work after i started feeling better, when I realized my foot felt as cold as an ice cube. I took my shoe and sock of, and my entire foot had turned dark purple and blown up like a ballon. Just looking at it made me sick to my stomach. I hobbled from my office to a doctor across the street and he drove me to the hospital as soon as he looked at it. I was lucky I didn't die from it. It was some kind of deadly staph bacteria usually found in wilderness areas. They had to try all kinds of different anti biotics until they found something to kill the nastard. That particular refugee is a dangerous place for stuff like that - bubonic plague, rabies from crazed bats, all kinds of things like that happen there. It is one of the wildest places left in the US.

Howdy All,
Never been nailed by one. See them and their dens all the time here in the Mojave desert. Other employees think I'm a little weird when I have one in hand. I wear gloves........ I'm no Croc hunter LOL

Frank, how big do they get there? The bark scorpions here do not get very big, maybe about an inch or so. Are the hot-desert variety much different?

Check the link I posted in the initial post. I've seen bark scorpions in my home from about ¾" to about 3". I've been told the youngsters are more dangerous because they're more likely to blow their wad in an attack compared to a more measured response by the adults.

In Texas a big controversy has erupted because the bluenoses have had "use a condom" removed from the list of ways to avoid sexually transmitted diseases in the sex ed text passed out to high schoolers. They are supposed to "abstain". Just thought that applies for some reason.
