Norton Anti-virus scan: 14 hours and counting...

I started a complete scan of my computer earlier today with Norton. It's now been 14 hours and it's still scanning!!

So far two infections have been found. I'm going to bed and will continue scannning till it's done. I hope it's done by tomorrow....

This should all be over after I attempt to install XP later this week.

And what do you know... it finished while I was posting this thread.

Two infected files with Trojan adware. It couldn't delete them, but did quarentine them.

Hasn't seemed to make a difference though...

Toss in the towel ... remove Norton and keep your money in your wallet. Are you not tired of seeing Norton (or MacAffie) throwing up pop-up reminders telling you to renew your license?

How about a FREE Anit-virus application that scans your hard drive and checks your email? It's free to individuals, but businesses pay.

It's called AVG Anti-virus Free-Edition, and it can be found here.

I've been using it for about 16 months now and nothing has got through yet (I keep the virus database as current as I can).

Give it a try, and remember it's FREEEEEEEEE!

:p

Let's all say "Bye-Bye Norton!"

i echo AVGs software.

i actually bought a renewal of my norton, but couldnt figure out how to install it, and horror of horrors, they charge for consultation.

i now use AVG, spybot seek and destroy, and ad aware. norton still runs at 2:15 am, but never finds anything. the others always find all sorts of malfeasance lurking in my computer.

Yes, but how does the quality of AVG compare to Norton? Not trying to be contrary; I really want to know.

This is coming from someone who's actually using AVG at the moment, but I only installed it originally because I couldn't afford the new version of Norton...

Thumbs up Try NOD32

I really like NOD32.
NOD32
Why?

- Has won the Virus Bulletin 100% award 29 times. More than any other antivirus software. VB 100%

- Automatic updates and scheduler.

- Advanced heruistics to detect new viruses not yet in the database.

- Extremely fast scanner. 20x faster than other antivirus software.

- Uses fewer system resources than any other antivirus software.

- Highly configurable.

- Available for all platforms... Windows, DOS, Linux, Novell, file and mail server

- NOD32 is the software Microsoft Release Labs uses on all new software before it is released.

Sounds like an effective anti-virus program! But, is it free (to individuals)?

I've installed AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition on all of my families (and in-laws) computers and I haven't heard any negative comments with the program, other than they miss the annoying pop-up windows telling them to send more money [to Norton et al]. :p

FWIW, something else might be hinkey. I routinely run NAV on servers which have upwards of 300 GB of data on them and while a full system scan takes a while, it doesn’t take 14 hours+

Also see this site for a highly rated and free virus scan
