Buying a medical supply business

Hello all,

I've been reading/contributing to Mercedesshop for over 4 years now (and have purchased 3 MB's during that time, of which I still own two!)

Hoping some of you can give me some of your wisdom on this business idea.

I was looking for a business for sale, and stumbled upon this one. The guy seems to have a great idea and would love to know everyone's thoughts!

He has been selling wheelchairs and other durable medical equipment to customers in the USA for 7 years. He purchases containers of wheelchairs, motorized scooters, bathtub safety bars, and other related equipment from China. He is buying about 100 wheelchairs at a time and says he goes through one container a month.

He is located in Canada (where I am also) and sells via a website to individuals. He says his typical customer base is the 60 million Americans with no health insurance.

He also does sales to corporate customers in the US, including major department stores, grocery stores, etc. They buy some of his cheaper units for use by their customers while shopping.

I see a huge need for this in the US in the future (aging seniors, baby boomers hitting wheelchair age soon, people living longer, etc). It seems like a good idea to me.

What are your thoughts on buying a wheelchair online? Do people actually do this or are they leery of it and would rather purchase from their doctor/hospital/medical supply company?

I remember years ago you could only get contact lenses from your eye doctor at inflated prices. Now you can get them in a mall, or even online from the contact lense discounters. Do you think people would consider wheelchairs/scooters the same way??

Would love anyone's wisdom, thoughts, perspectives on this idea (good OR bad!).

The business is for sale and I'm seriously considering buying it.

If anyone is a financial wiz out there, email me and I'll share the transaction details/annual sales/profit numbers privately to see if you think it's a good buy.

Thanks all!! And THANKS to the Open Discussion gods who made this forum come back!

Neal
