What did everyone do this weekend?¿
Howdy All,
I had 4 days off and so did everybody at work. Since nobody was at the airport I took the dogs out there to run jackrabbits. The dogs are in the middle of their competitive running season so we haven't run the local jacks for about a month so I figured there would be a bunch. I was right. And I'm still right. Those buggers are quick, elusive and fast. On Thur. both dogs had run a few jacks before Chime kicked one up and gave it fits for a while. The jack got about 50+ yards ahead. Then at about a half mile Chime was closing in and got to about 20 feet or less and she got tired and JR started pulling away. If she hadn't run so many of them critters earlier she would have had a special Thanksgiving feast. The other 3 days had some short to medium runs. A good weekend for all.

Since we also had 4 days, I thought it might be a good time to introduce my 10 yr old daughter to US nuclear history. Checked the website at the Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos last week and they were open on Friday. Great. We could drive to NM on Wednesday, spend Thursday in Taos, and get an early start to Los Alamos on Friday and have a stimulating time learning nuclear physics and discussing the ethics of nuclear bombs. So, after having driven about 425 miles we arrived in Los Alamos only to learn that since we checked the web last week, they had changed their mind and the museum was closed! 850 miles round trip and nothing to show for it except for breakfast at Mcdonalds in Los Alamos.

I used to live in Los Alamos. You should have checked out the Anazai Indian ruins at Bandelier National Monument nearby - that's pretty cool, or driven into the Jemez Caldera, known locally as the "Valle Grande" - a tremendous sight. All kinds of cool stuff up in there, especially if you are into geology.
Altho this isn't the time of year for it, if your a golfer and you find yourself out that way, make sure you play golf at the public course. The feds shower grant money on the city of Los Alamos to make up for lost property tax revenues from the Lab, and they try to provide amenities to keep the local population of geniuses happy, so they have a stunning federally financed public course that rivals many top-notch private courses, and you can play it for around $20 bucks. My Thanksgiving weekend was spent at home, but I got called into work unexpectedly on Friday, and that pretty much ruined my plans for the rest of the weekend. |

I had duck for dinner on Thanksgiving day. On Friday I drove to the Florissant fossil beds west of Colorado Springs to check out the petrified redwoods. Saturday morning was spent at the University of Denver interviewing a faculty member. Spent that afternoon at a luthier's shop. Sunday was breakfast with Kerry

Well, I've been working, and fighting a severe cold at the same time. Oh well. It's not like I have any family down here to spend the time with anyway.

I cut the rear panel off my ebay bargain W123 coupe and welded on a new one using my super-duper thousand dollar welder (It was raining).

The high point of my weekend was getting to meet some other forum members at the Houston GTG last Saturday. I met Diesel4Me, AirFoil, RLeo, halman2228, and... oh just great, I can't remember the online handle of the guy there who had the dark grey 87' 300SDL. It was great, the pics are good too, I've never seen the 300SD look so good.

Went out to eat with my mother for Thanksgiving, stayed at home and relaxed on Friday (watched "Big Eden" on the Sundance Channel), went to the office on Saturday morning and passed out checks, then went to the Houston GTG that afternoon, then went shopping, then Sunday morning I drove up to my friend's house in Temple and helped him cut down some trees, had some birthday cake, got high, then went to eat dinner at a truckstop on Hwy 35 (roast beef, mashed potatos, green beans, corn bread, and banana pudding) then drove back to Houston.
BTW the screen handle for the man with the Pearl Black SDL is Smokey. He hardly ever posts though. This was the third of four GTG's for Airfoill, Smokey, and myself. It was nice meeting you and your dad Joe! |

JJL:
I thought it was always proper to assume it was raining in Scotland unless told otherwise?? What needed to be replaced on the car? I thought it looked pretty solid on Ebay? What exactly are the requirements for MOT? When I was looking at vehicles over there, I saw lots of references made to 'welding needed' for MOT. It's not something that gets done in the US to my knowledge so it seems odd. Do body panels need to be solid or is it just the frame?

There is a fair bit of rust on the car at the rear end. The rear panel (with lights etc) was rotten. It had been filled (bondo) and looked cosmetically ok from the outside, but I'm picky about this so I cut it off. The left rear wheel arch was also rotten, I'm in the process of fixing that too. I may be an auto-OCD. Otherwise, not a bad car for £450. The MOT test (government mandatory annual safety check) specifies no rust within about 18 inches of a suspension pick-up point, so most of the rust is legal. I'm amazed there is nothing similar in the US (Canada?) - do the mechanically-challanged just drive until the wheels fall off?

Friend of mine was driving an old Ford Galaxy down the road one day in upstate NY and it broke right in two as a result of being so rusty.
He also had a similar car that had been in a bad rear end collison. He simply moved the fuel tank inboard, cut off everything from the back window aft, attached a piece of plywood right below the back window and drove it for years. I bet they wouldn't allow that in the UK.
