Question Do you have any obscure music in your collection?

I've been a big Chuck Mangiogne fan for many years. While he is well known, not all of his work is available on disc.

I just purchased a double album of his from the '70's entited "Friends and Love".

I used to listen to it all the time in high school and even wrote a play for its title song with the lead role to be played by a girl I was in love with.

So that's the newest member of my obscure music collection. Here's a brief writeup from Chuck's website:

Friends & Love... A Chuck Mangione Concert

Chuck Mangione was invited to conduct a Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra*
concert in May of 1970, and was given full rein of the affair. The result
is contained in this album - a concert which Chuck composed for a full
symphony orchestra and six superbly accomplished soloists, imaginatively
staged with special visual effects, and performed before a standing-room-only
crowd of over 3,500. This concert was videotaped by WXXI in Rochester, New York,
under grants from the Eastern Educational Television Network, the Corporation
for Public Broadcasting, and the R. T. French Co.

Mangione's music is strongly rooted in the jazz idiom, but he is reluctant
to categorize his compositions: " 'Friends & Love was a gathering of
musicians from a variety of backgrounds, each one of whom contributed
to the whole. When the music is honest and full of love, labels aren't
important and people will listen with an open mind".

What obscure titles do you have?

I've been trying to track down an obscure debut LP by a 70's studio group named "Sand" that I once had. The interesting feature was that it was packaged as a double LP, but only recorded on one side, so when you stacked both platters on a changer, you didn't have to flip.

I've got a few in my old vinyl collection, but can't remember all right now. I do have one from the mid 70's of a band called P.F.M.

Was surprised to see they're still around. Their album "Cook" has a version of the "William Tell Overture" that simply rocks!
Another group from about the same era, "Triumverat" did some pretty cool progressive rock at the time. I have their Spartacus album.

Lot's more, but can't remeber right now.

While I'm thinking of it, are there any good sources online to buy vinyl? I bought that Mangione album off of his website last night, but I'm sure I paid premium for it!

I've got 45's up the ying yang.
How about "The 2,000 Pound Bee" by The Ventures?
"X-15" by Johnny U.S. Bonds?
Ummm, so much weird stuff you wouldn't believe it.
I have "On The Dark Side" by "Eddie and the Cruisers" (right after the movie Eddie and the Cruisers was released). It was later a hit by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band (they actually did the music for the movie), but to find the exact same song with the artist listed as "Eddie and the Cruisers" is pretty rare.

I've got "The Wizard of Oz" disco record by Meco on vinyl. frightening memories of that album... "I'll get you my pretty, hee he he he he he!!!!"

sadly, the turntable recently took a crap. (death from inactivity I suppose) There goes all my Mantovani orchestra christmas music!

I've got Fox & the Hound and Lady & the Tramp picture-disks... full color LPs-kinda wierd...

I've got some recordings of DCI Drum & Bugle Corps Championships... that's pretty obscure.

How much do you want to spend? There are some nice tables out there for around $300. These two will give you a (small) glimpse of audio nirvana:

Truly frightening to know that there is ANYone else in the world that knows of Premiata Formeria Marconi...

One of my new favorites is a Dutch band called Krezip - just a bunch of kids, but they've got a two singers (both girls) that are able to reach that certain spot in me. My reaction to their music is very much like how I react to Janis Joplin - its real, visceral, raw emotion. Good stuff

Francis Dunnery is another goodie (not sure how obscure he is though).
