Digital Camera image uploading to a HD
 

So I borrowed a digi cam from my friend. 2.1 mega pixel Samsung. My friend also gave me a usb cord to upload the images onto my hard drive.

I downloaded a software called " photolightning" that is suppose to upload the images via usb cable. When i connect the camera via the usb to my comp. The message pops up "New Hardware Found" I dont have the orig software that came with the camera, but I thought the "Photolightning" should take care of the problem. It states that its universal and should work with most cameras.

Anyone has any ideas as to what could I use to upload the images from the camera onto my hard drive? Any universal software etc...

BTW: I still run WIN98..

I'm not sure about win98 but XP seems to install hardware automatically with USB connections. Did you click on the 'new hardware found' bubble? Sometimes this will lead you to an autoinstall. You may need to download a driver from Samsung's website. I'm not familiar with the programme you downloaded as I use Photoshop. Good luck- someone who knows '98 better probably can be of more use.

If you are using XP, just say OK to everything when the New Hardware Found box comes up. Then just open Explorer, and you will see the camera listed as another hard drive, assigned its own drive letter, which represents the Smartdisk in your camera. You can copy, rename or remove the files from your camera from Explorer. To make it easier, in Explorer, click View and then View Thumbnails, and you will see your pictures as thumbnails. Delete the ones you don't want and move the rest to your hard drive's "My Pictures" folder from there, until your Smartdisk is cleared and therefore ready to take more pictures. You can move them using Drag and Drop.

The software included is usually more for manipulating the image, resizing, cropping, etc. If you click on the thumbnail in Explorer it should automatically open your picture file for editing in this software package.

Google the Camera brand and name + driver install then install.

Don't do this with the camera connected to the USB.

I downloaded the driver for the camera, however its format is wierd. I am unable to read anything. Instead words, there are lines going accorss. Perhaps the driver is for WIN 2000 XP etc... O well, I just have to unpack my new computer, it came with XP so there should be no problems

This is one way to look at it, but I have to ask why? Most people who express this view do not seem to be very knowlegeable about the subject and are just repeating something that they heard. Or they want to sell you a new computer, or both.

The Win9x/ME OS from Microsoft was notable for much more frequent crashing and the "blue screen of death" fault, which really isn't dependent upon one's computer knowledge or tech savvy. System reliability is worth the upward migration to Windows NT workstation, Windows 2000, XP or a flavor of Linux. Couple that with the diminishing support of manufacturers to develop backward compatible periperhal drivers for new equipment, then it's clear that an OS upgrade will breath new life into old hardware that is capable of running it, which would be the majority of Pentium II or better based PC's with a good amount of ram.
