teeth whitener recommendations

so, what do you guys suggest? I've used a target brand 14-day gel before. it's the one you brush on yer teeth at night. the bottle looks something like a whiteout bottle. anyway, it did seem to work--but just a little. I didn't like the hassle of "painting" the gooey gel on my teeth and having that "I need to spit" feeling everytime. also, I didn't follow its direction of dipping the brush in the gel for each tooth. anyway, I'm thinking about the strips that you stick on yer upper and lower teeth at night. but they seem to cost quite a bit. I wanna know if they actually work before I spend that kind of dough on them. so what brand and what type (e.g., gel brush-on or clear strip stick-on)?

btw, I don't smoke or drink coffee, just tea. and my teeth aren't as bad as this post may suggest I just want some pearly whites that people on tv have!

Some people are more prone to teeth staining than others. I have a friend who neither drinks coofee/tea nor smokes, and has yellow stains. I also have them who smoke and drink coffee/tea and they are white as can be.

To get them as white as the TV people have them, better be prepared to spend some $$$$$.

A visit to a dentist to buy a kit with the gel is your best bet, spending around 200.00 for the template and the kit(I have one). Worked pretty well, although none of the techniques is hassle free and they all seem uncomfortable.

The one I have requires you to sleep with them on overnight, if possible. They fit real snug and don't bother me in terms of gell spilling out causing me to swallow that crap.

My advice - don't do it.

Ask yourself why? Unless your teeth are really badly stained...like say a lifelong British smoker working in a coffee shop...you don't need it.

Teeth are naturally ivory-colored. Hence the tint of yellow.

By "whitening" you are "bleaching" your teeth. Your teeth are living utensils built to last a lifetime with proper care. The nerve of a tooth is susceptible to damage which can lead to a root canal and a dead tooth.

Is jumping on a trend worth potential damage to your teeth?

Just my happily, slightly yellowed-toothed perspective.

Cool

Wife says that in the 80's, most of the models she did photo shoots with used Ajax or Comet. Really: a small amount, brush vigorously, rinse, spit, don't swallow.

I drink lots of coffee and tea. I used the crest white strips before my wedding and they were great.

I also used generic walgreen brand trays and they were just as good and ten bucks cheaper.

My wife says that using a laser could crack the teeth. Don't know if this is true, but she said she read and article somewhere.

There's a running joke around my parts (Hick central, Washington):

What do you have when there's 6 Arlington cheerleaders standing in a row?

A full set of teeth!
