Favorite Regional Foods

One of the nice things about traveling a lot in the US, is get to find out what the regional specialities are as you travel the states. I just thought I would list a few I've came across - perhaps you could share the same info so us travelers would know what to order when in town:

Maryland - Whenever I have a layover in Baltimore, which is just about always if you fly Southwest, I always grab a bowl of crab bisque from a nice sit down resturant on the concourse out side of the secured area. I've also ordered it at a few bars there as well. It is fabulous.

Missisippi - every Southern state thinks they barbecue the best pork ribs. In Ole Miss, it ain't no brag. I don't know what they put on those things, but they will blast you out of your seat if you eat at the down home resturants.

New Hampshire - On the coast, lobster with a New England Claim Chowder on the side. Just about any of the lobster houses in Portsmouth or along the US 1 or 1A coastal highways will blow you away

Maine - Maine Scallops cooked in maple syrup. Out of this world

Louisiana - forget the gumbo, order the oyster stew. Nothing like it. Those friggin bacon-wrapped shrimps stuffed with hot peppers and cheese are a heart attack on a plate, but worth dying for. Do your cardiologist a real favor and dip them in melted butter.

Buckweat Pancakes.....in the West Virginia, Southwest PA ohio area......fantastic. Usually a wintertime fare if you are anywhere near Morgantown, WV.....Old fashioned ones are what you want....

People with wheat allergies can eat them, Can't describe them but they are unique and great.

Fried Liberal...Virginia.

Very seriously, traveling all over, I can't find a decent Italian beef anywhere but in Chicago. Also the home of the world's best pizza (this one is wide open for arguement).

Sweet Tea, from the south. damn addictive, and I'm not sure I could return to the north without it. Last time I tried, I switched to Tang, and that almost killed me.

I have to concur on the pulled pork BBQ. mmmm. a few spots here in town are wonderful.

Hoagies. hoagies are known as subs or grinders elsewhere, but in pittsburgh, it's a hoagie. Primanti Brother's (say: prih-MANN-eez) makes 'em with fries right on the sandwich. drool.

Lobster in maine and new england in general... we got spoiled living next door to a lobsterman. $3/lb fresh that day. why eat anything else?

Beer. There are some good regional beers, and Yuengling is my fav. Lancaster and surrounding areas in southeast central PA have a great hometown brew.

Rasin Pie. generally available if amish or menonites are nearby. my wife tried to make one for me and ended up with rasin soup. So good when done right.

There's a flavor of barbeque you can get in the Carolinas and nowhere else. I miss that stuff.

Also: crabcakes from Chesapeake bay. Has anyone here been to Tangier Island?

I believe the eternal debate is: With or without slaw?

edit: ( I think it's also called pulled pork and is the cheapest part of the pig smoked for 24 hours)

Maryland crabs, Michigan cherries (or cherry pie, cherry syrup, cherry ... you get the point), Vermont maple sugar or maple syrup. I'm not that much of a food afficianado.

Cool Odd Lobster Factoid

Did you know in the old days, lobster ws thought of as food only fir for slaves and endentured servants? There were even laws regulating how much of the stuff could be fed to them.
