Laptop won't recognize CD/DVD drive anymore
Last week my Toshiba laptop (w/XP) was locking up, or more accurately, just shutting itself off randomly. I decided to take it apart and vacuum out the accumulated dust on the CPU. It's been working fine since then, with no problems...until I went to use the CD/DVD drive last night. The computer no longer even recognizes the drive, but it will open up and spin for a short spell when a disc is installed. The drive doesn't show up in the My Computer file. I can't find the system restore disc that came with the computer...duh!
Anyone know how I can re-train the unit? TIA |

You may need to simply access your BIOS to set it straight. Check with the manufacturer on the access method (usually a key combination or F key during bootup).

Maybe the device drive is corupped....go to control panel then system and hardware then Device manager......DVD/CD roms highlight and remove...then reboot should pick up device and any drivers it needs automaticly.....may solve it...

had same deal earlier this year. first, run your virus programme because mine was caused by meliscious java code... second, take the drive out blow air/vac. and re-install making sure you push it all the way in squarily... may want to clean the contact points when you have the drive out...
hope that helps... |

Update: I finally found my CD/DVD drive this morning. Tried removing and rebooting the drivers, but it still didn't want to function. I then went to the Toshiba support site and checked service bulletins for my model. Had to go into the Registry Editor to remove the files for some third party CD editor software. Once I did that and removed/rebooted the drivers, everything showed up again! Proof that even a dip$h!t like me can investigate leads and follow directions.
Thanks for all the tips. |

Glad you found the trouble....and it didn't cost you a bundle to fix.
