Microsoft Anti-Spyware

It's new, it's beta, and it looks pretty slick. Read about/download here: Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

I don't know about Microshaft software anymore. Considering it's their POS IE allowing all the spyware in, I'll be damned if I give them the satisfaction of blocking what they create. I switched browsers to Mozilla Firefox, swept my machine clean with AdAware, and guess what? I don't get anymore spyware. Gone. Then my 5 year logs in and uses IE -- BOOM! 1 or 2 spies!

Heh heh.

Isn't that kind of like being in a huge city, walking innocently down the street, when you're suddenly mown down by the driver of the only car in the city? And then the car that hits you backs up (running over you again in the process), and the driver, who happens to be not only very rich but also very drunk, offers you a ride to the hospital? But then he charges you for the ride, and you are forced to pay it because it's the only car in the whole city? And then, right after you've been dropped off, said 'Thank you for the ride, sir!', and the one car in the city drives away, you realize he actually dropped you off only halfway to your destination, and swiped your wallet and your watch while he was at it? So you have to drag yourself the rest of the way, bleeding all over the sidewalk, assisted at times by beggars with names like spybot and ad-aware?

Yeah. Like that.

That's about the jist of it, my puter has been running perfectly until my daughter used IE for shopping she only visited so call IE trusted sites and I'm still removing spy trash.

It's the repackaged product from the company that Microsoft bought last month, Giant Software.
It's a very good product. Better than AdAware or Spybot.

Microsoft Offers Emergency Security Patch for Its Free Security Program
(email to a friend)

REDMOND, Washington - Microsoft Corp., whose popular Windows software is a frequent target for Internet viruses, is offering a free patch to fix security holes detected in its free security program. The program, with monthly updates, was meant to be a step toward plans by Microsoft to sell full-blown anti-virus software later this year. "We expected some problems, of course," admitted Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, "But to get pounded the day after our release, well, we just weren't prepared for that."

"Any time Gates [offers to help], I get nervous."
-- 'LinuxVanPelt', forum poster
Microsoft said Friday that consumers can download the patch and any subsequent patches from the company's Web site www.microsoft.com. Updated versions of the core security program will be offered automatically and free each month. "We had intended to charge for the product eventually, but that's questionable now," explained Ballmer.

Also being offered is a free program to remove "spyware," a category of irritating programs that secretly monitor the activities of Internet users and can cause sluggish computer performance or popup ads. "I have a real problem accepting anti-spyware from a company like Microsoft," said one forum poster using the handle 'LinuxVanPelt', "Any time Gates sidles up close and says, 'Here, let me help you,' I get nervous."

"Our offers of free virus and spyware removal tools are intended to convince consumers that we're working to improve our software's security," said Rich Kaplan, vice president for Microsoft's security business and technology unit, "It's just that sort of attitude that we hoped to change with these products. And even with the security issues we're facing, I believe we can yet instill confidence in the public."

A Symantec executive, Vincent Weafer, said Microsoft's success as an antivirus company at Symantec's expense was not guaranteed. "As you can see, they're walking around with a big bull's-eye painted on their back," he said, "And nobody seriously believes that's going to change. This is an area we certainly think we can differentiate ourselves from Microsoft. We've worked hard over the years to build trust with customers."

I wonder when people who use OS-X will need it.

Same stuff here. My wife had loads of junk on her system using IE. I _think_ it's gone, ... No further detected junk after switching to Mozilla, though. It's a constant battle, since guests sometimes use IE.

I hope more people realize that the time they spend cleaning up their systems could just as easily be spent learning another operating system, like GNU/Linux. That just seems much better in the long run since the payoff is enormous.

Webwech,
Your analogy was a riot, but the disclaimer was even better. You continue to fascinate!
