DSL Modem problem.

I've had DSL for 2-3 years and the service has been perfect to say the least (only one outage in 2 years that lasted 1-2 hours) but lately I've been getting lag and dropped connections. I put new CAT5 connectors and everything, I tested the phone line with a signal generator.

How long do DSL modems last? and what is that absolute BEST modem I can buy? I currently have a cheap speedstream.

Odd you mention that. I have a speedstream as well, and it has been doing the same thing lately. I've had it about eight months. How long have you had yours?

Generally you have to stick to the modem provided by the ISP.

About 2 years i did a latency check on broadband reports and it's averaging 400ms which is way unacceptable. http://www.broadbandreports.com/linequality

I'm going to follow the http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/11181 checklist and go from there. I might have an unfiltered Tivo or something.

I'm pretty sure you can use whatever modem you want it only has to be compliant with your system (adsl, sdsl).

Well, if that is the case, it is generally a rule in the hardware business that if you use Cisco equipment, you are going to get the best available.

No argument about that, did you run the test? Mine revealed that my dsl provider router is causing the delay.

I'm not going to tell them that I know this until they try to BS me.

they hate hackers.

Speaking of hackers are you familiar with playing with google search strings that will display unsecured webcams?

I have to deal with Verizon which has a set of chimps working for them. They have no idea when they get an outage and they wish to blame every problem with their system on your computer

No amount of discussion with them can convince them that they have the problem. They simply go back to their standard line: We don't show any problems on our system. It must be your computer.

It is so exasperating that the local cable company has taken this statement as an advertising slogan.

My speeds have dropped to 400K at night and there is nothing that Verizon wants to do about it. Time to switch to the cable. Even though it costs a bit more, it runs at 2M and is far more reliable than the DSL. I just cannot bear the chimpanzee situation any longer.

Rant off.

I tried to, but I hit a login screen.

Google is open to all kinds of hacks. I wasn't aware of that one, but it sounds interesting.

The login is very simple and the test will tell the whole story, the google hack is on Johnny Neutron's site I'll leave it at that anyone that has anything to do with hacking knows the site.

Thanks for those links. I logged into their site and was able to troubleshoot this system, with some success. I needed to change the Tcp receive window from its default setting of no value to 65535.

The machine loads pages noticeably faster now.

I also run the Spybot search with the "immunize" feature turned on. It is rather interesting. I set it to tell me how often it blocks one of those tracking programs that frequently are installed. In the first five minutes, it warned me 20 timesthat it blocked a program. I finally had to let it block the programs silently. They are incessant. Running the program every week, without the immunize feature, is worthless.

Thanks again, MedMech.

I've been doing DSL Design and Support Process work for over 8 years for our local Telco. DSL Modems certainly do get flakey over time, and the same Modem for 2-3 years is probably nearing the end of it's life, although I had a Newbridge Mainstreet that lasted me 5 years. However, before you buy another one, you should definately get your phone line checked at both DSL and voice frequencies from the Telephone Co.'s end of the loop. It is statistically far more likely that the trouble is due to phone line than it is the modem. Make sure that every span is tested- the long loop, the feeder pair, the drop wire from pole to your house, and your inside telephone wiring.

Something else you can do yourself is unplug every phone in the house then see how your DSL behaves. If having all phones unplugged improves the situation then you may have a bad DSL splitter (or bad micro-filter on one of the phones if that's the way you do it). Also do same disconnect check with alarm system and Satellite Receiver if you have these.

Thanks for the info Dave! You saved me another phone call to the isp, the problem occured again so I did another test on the line and called the ISP. The CSR said there wasn't a problem so I emailed him the test, now he acknowledged there IS a problem and I'm at level 2 now.

Thanks again.

If anyone is having problems with their cable/dsl you HAVE to use broadbandreports.com .
