Junk News
MSNBC's showing a several-minute special on Prince Harry's big scandal. Oh, it's such a crucial and important story, one with ramifications for all of us -- surely you've heard of the scandal, perhaps even partaken in some serious debate about the issue at the office, pondered the historical ramifications of it -- Prince Harry's Nazi costume.
Sigh. Who cares about this junk? |

Well, you cared about it enough to spread the news to the shopforum.
I can think of more worthless news.

You watch MSNBC* AND you're shocked--shocked! that they would stoop to this level of junk?
* feel free to replace this network with Fox, NBC, CBS, CNN, ABC, etc. The premise of the question remains the same, doesn't it? A pox on all their houses. |

That's the problem with those 24 hour news programs- the need for constant news programming- sometimes things get slow..really slow.

Drudge and Fox are giving it big play too. Everyone loves the Royal Misfits. I wish they would all get a real job.

The furore, which has made headlines around the world, represents a new low for the prince, whose late teenage years have been characterised by a facility for "hell-raising", including excessive drinking, cannabis use and taking a swing at photographers.

I know everyone shakes their heads over this stuff... the overexposure of the Scott Peterson case, the attention paid to Survivor, the fact Jerry Springer is on the air. The ubiquitous head-shaking begs the question -- who watches this stuff? Becaise someone is, or it wouldn't be on the air. |

The obvious solution is to kill your TV...I did. I last pirated cable during the 2000 election when 'my' candidate was running. Killed it not long thereafter, and have never been happier.

That's in a pure prairie league baby
I can see why you think you belong to me
I never tried to make you think or make you see one thing for yourself But now you're off with someone else and I'm alone You see I thought I might keep you for my own Amy, what you wanna do I think I could stay with you For a while maybe longer if I do Don't you think the time was right for us to find All the things we thought weren't proper could be in time And can't you see which way we should turn together or alone I can never see what's right or what is wrong Don't you take too long to tell me Amy, what you wanna do I think I could stay with you For a while maybe longer if I do Amy, what you wanna do I think I could stay with you For a while maybe longer if I do Now just come to what you want you've had your way And all the things you thought before just faded into gray And you can say that I don't know if it's you or if it's me If it's one of us I'm sure we both will see Won't you look at me and tell me Amy, what you wanna do I think I could stay with you For a while maybe longer if I, longer if I do Amy, what you wanna do I think I could stay with you For a while maybe longer if I do |

With the merging of news and entertainment, this is what we get. Why, of the many thousands of murders in the U.S., did television feel the need to cover the Scott Peterson story in such detail? Or O.J. Simpson?
I read a great little book on this subject some years back, AMUSING OURSELVES TO DEATH, by, I think, Jonathan Kozoll. He saw all this crap coming. Our electronic media cannot be trusted to be journalists, in the old-fashioned sense of the word. News divisions used to be sort of independent entities in the networks; now, like everything else on television, they are totally market driven . In the case of Fox, they are market driven with the added motivation--to parrot the Republican, neo-conservative line. Joe B. |
