Selfish thing you have done....

Since I think that touting your selfless acts, is contradictory, I thought I'd start a thread on selfish things we have done.

Here's mine:

I recently went to Outbback with my 15 year old son. He loves acertain dish there, called toowoomba pasta.

Anyway, it's off the menu for lack of cutomer support. The bartender knows me and checks to see if they can make it one last time.

They do, but by the time they bring it, he's full on the other crap. We'll call them appetizers.

So he takes it home and says that he'll eat it the next day for dinner. HGe hid all the way to the back of the fridge, under a some other junk we'll call leftovers.

You guessed it, I ate it for lunch when I stopped by the house during the day.

HE confronted me and I fessed up. Pretty disappointed look on his fact too!

Didn't feel too bad. He's always eating my $hit and taking my razors and stuff w/o asking.

Any takers?

Everything I do is a selfish act. There is always payback in it for me otherwise I won't do it. NILIF:= Nothing In Life Is Free. I'm just brutally honest about it.

I read the Selfless act thread and so far, I have yet to see a truely selfless act where it was done for the benifit of someone else without ANY FORM of benifit to the person doing the act.

aklim, first off let me say that i like to read your posts. they are the "cut through the crap" sort of stuff that makes me smile when i read it.

i wonder though if this last statement might have a condition to it. would it go to intent?

for example, if you do something with the intent towards someone else's benefit without regard or consideration for your own benefit at all. would that be selfless?

if that is selflessness, then what if any benefit in return, be it even a simple good feeling, were purely circumstancial and unplanned? does that destroy the selflessness of the original act?

in other words, if the benefit in return for the selfless act is unintended/unplanned, is the act still selfless?

give me one of those "cut the crap" answers, they make me laugh......i'll be selfish in that request.

If it was unplanned, and you got a bonus, sure it is selfless. However that would be like a reflex thing where i hit your funny bone and your hand moved. However, if you had any sort of thought processing then I don't think so. After all, if it was harmful to you, you would not do it.

so, you read my post about helping the soldier's family with the car repairs in the "selfless act" thread, was that indeed a selfless act if my first and only intent was to take care of business for someone who couldn't?

i deliver furniture, and i have a partner that i go out with on a daily basis...theres 5 teams of two in our warehouse....well, whenever my partner doesnt come in, i have to take the alternate guy who is a turd to put it very lightly...no one sees how he still has a job...whenever he goes with me, i always keep his half of the tips, which can be pretty decent at times....and i also make him keep the truck clean all day...thats pretty assholish of me i guess....screw him though, if he would buck up and carry his own weight, id treat him fairly

As long as you didn't think and just acted as in a reflex, I would say so. However, if I asked for your kidneys, you'd definately think about it even for a split second. You did think about helping the soldiers family for a bit, didn't you?

I see examples of people helping other people with no expectation of a return benefit every day here on the threads.

Never underestimate the ability for ANYONE to become a hero given certain circumstances. PEOPLE can have so much good in them, you have to believe that. Even ol' AKLIM.
