Attention Gun Nuts – Please Help

First of all this does not happen to me – often, I mean this is a totally unnecessary purchase, but today I was in a gun shop that was having a closing the door type of sale. Remember that movie “Quigley Down Under”. He had a long-range rifle with a long brass scope on it – a Sharps I think. Well today I saw an Italian replica by Uberti of a roll block Remington in .357 with a scope like that. Just beautiful walnut stock with the brass scope. A. Uberti’s catalogue does not list it in .357 but in .22 mag., and I’m unable to find out what caliber Remington made the gun in originally. At any rate $770 with the scope - would something like this hold or appreciate over 15/20 years?

You do not want a Uberti or Pedersoli repro Sharps except for weekend shooting.

You want a Shiloh Sharps, the best and most authentic Sharps repros out there, especially the Farmingdale NY production models,I have one, Creedmoor model in 45-120 1"octagon barrel.

These fine guns hold their value when bought new and appreciate at a favorable rate.

They were/are also made in the original calibers, most of which are available from black powder dealers/reloaders.

Do a search on gunsamerica or auction arms.

Fit and finish......reminds me of the Bipolar furniture restorer who offed himself by drinking shellac and linseed oil.

He had a horrible death but a fine finish.

The Shilohs are beyond reproach. Chiefly the Farmingdale production, hand fitted and assembled as opposed to the others mentioned, this is reflected in the prices second hand ones fetch in the market.

Sharps are neat but...

Just remember: there's no such thing as 'plinking' with a BP cartridge rifle. Every time you touch off that 45-120, you get to feel the full import of 120gr of FFG.

No scope

Unless my memory is having a "senior moment", I only remember that Quigley's rifle had a front blade and rear vernier sight.

He may be recalling Marlon Brando's Sharps in The Missouri Breaks {great, weird film} That had a full length brass scope, Navy Arms & others reproduce them fairly well, Dixie Gun Works stocks them I believe.

It may have been another movie. I remember the shooter carefully removing the end caps from this long brass scope and then having a single shot. The rifle I’m looking at is not a Sharps, but a small frame Remington Rolling Block with one of these replica scopes mounted on it.

Briefly the Remingtons have a rolling block which is held closed by the hammer,It depends upon the strength of 2 cross pins, they cannot take much pressure,I have seen one come apart when fired with a cartridge that was too powerful.

The Sharps and their derivatives are Falling Blocks, a square or rectangular steel breechblock moves up and down inside the receiver,it is one of the strongest actions known. This was the gun of choice when long range shooting, requiring a strong, trouble free action came into vogue in the late 1800's fostered by many shooting competitions including Creedmoor here on the Island.

A friend has a Farquar falling block chambered in .300 H&H magnum that packs a punch.

Armed with this info why not do a search, Dixie Gun Works, good place to start, auction arms, gunsamerica or lookup remington rolling block, falling block, Navy Arms or go to some cool black powder sites, alot out there.

thanks carlton, i have been to several of those sites and been enticed by the content. however, i'd yet to be in contact with someone who owned one who was not selling thiers. i appreciate the info. it sounds as though i could trust that a purchase from shiloh would be a prudent one. thanks again.
