Cost of inflation.....fuel prices...
Anyone out there bright enough to figure out what the cost of a gallon of fuel was/is adjusted for inflation say in 1994,1984 and 1974?
Maybe I phrased it incorrectly, but my point is that @ 1.87 per gallon, we are probably paying about the same or less, adjusted for inflation than in decades past. Thanks for the help.

Between 1974 and 1984 cummulative inflation totalled a whopping 224%.
Between 1974 and 2004 inflation was 403%. I don't know what it was for you guys, but when I first started having to pay for my own gas it was, at its cheapest, $0.79 at some ARCO's. This was 1986 and it was leaded. So... inflation between 1986 and 2004 is 173% so I should be paying $1.36 for leaded. We could be more charitable and say something like $0.90 for leaded which is probably more realistic since we're all using unleaded these days in which case we should be paying $1.53/gal. Part of why we're all miffed is because nnflation has been real low the past few years. That's what makes it seem as though gas prices are going through the roof.

I did a research paper about five years ago, about the staggering differences in the way the U.S. (Detroit) designed cars vs Europe and the rest of the world in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and even 80s. Biggest factor in designing bodies and engines? Price of gas... #1! Price of gas in Europe has usually been between 5-10 times what the U.S. was paying. Europe developed and perfected diesel, 4 and 6 cylinder high performance engines way before Detroit because they had to. Even Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, the high end cars, were mostly 6s. Less than 10% of Mercedes sales were 8 cylinder models.

Gas was 69 cents per gallon in Atlanta in 1998/1999. Sometimes it went up to 89 cents, and they'd run special news stories showing folks where to find the cheapest gas. Atlanta usually has some of the cheapest gas in the country. Now, if only diesel would return to its artificially low price...
