We were in Thailand vacationing during the tsunami
Fortunately for us we were in the northern part of Thailand, Chiangmai. My wife felt a little earthquake around mid-morning. I did not feel anything. Then we heard the tragic news first in Indonesia and later in Thailand. I will never forget the face of a boy maybe 7-10 years old. He was being interviewed at a local hospital. He was the only survivor in his family. He just sat there crying. I had to switch the channel because my eyes got so watery that I could not watch it any longer.
We went to local store and bought 10 large carton boxes of water to donate to the survivors. We dropped the water off at the local post office because they would deliver any donations at NO CHARGE. What a great compassionate service Being close to the tsunami area, we felt we were part of it even though we were only tourists. ****et was hit hard by the tsunami. We have visited that island a few times in the past. The island depends almost solely on the tourist industry. Those that servived would be jobless because a lot of the local business were wiped out. I think it would take a generation for the hard hit areas to recover! Many survivors are orphans who is going to help them in the long run After one year, who will continue to help them? I wish at each anniversary, we will revive our efforts once more to help them. |
