I guess this person saw my unsuccessful attempt to get past the reserve on a 300, and corresponds to me through e-bay:

i have noticed that you placed a bid on a mercedes 92 300 Series.i am contacting you because i have the same model for sale ..and it looks better than the one you are bidding on. the price is 2400 $ including shipping ,i`m willing to use and escrow service in case you`re interested and you want me to ship the car to you for inspection before i get paid .if you would like to see some pictures please e-mail me.

Yikes!

Sellers are not supposed to be doing that - that's against eBay's rules, if I'm not mistaken.

Oh, I don't think he is a seller, he is a con. "If it's to good to be true it probably isn't true." Greed is what gets most people in trouble with these scams.

If it's better than what I was bidding on...Hhmm. 92 300D T 2.5 w/<60K for $2600 including shipping. I take six please

If it was close enough to inspect and pay in person......then fine. I have bought things from sellers who did not met reserve after auction closed.

My 1983 300D was one......it had a $3,600 buy it now....a $3,300 reserve and high bid was $2,900. I got it 2 weeks later for $2,800 cash. Directly off the guy in person.

This contact person has nothing listed on e-bay he/she just came out of the blue. When I first saw the e-mail was thinking it was the seller wanting to wheel and deal.....but not

Like I said........unless he was local to you..........I would avoid it.

E-bay may offer next to no protection but dealing like that offers ZERO protection.

A typical ebay scam on high ticket items is when people are sent a second chance offer on an item that was being sold. you have to look carefully because more often than not, these second chance offers have a completely different e-mail address and payment address than the seller who was actually selling the item. Always asking for their high bid price. If someone were to fall for it, they would be screwed for sure.

I sell a lot on ebay and have had scammers send these to my bidders after an auction has ended and reserve not met.

What is wierd is that one can no longer e-mail bidders. Ebay stopped allowing that long time ago last year. In attempt to stop people from contacting bidders during sales etc.
So how did this person get the bidder's email address????

One can only contact the seller via ebay.

Only way I can conceive of getting a bidder's email address is when the bidder
uses their email addess as their ebay username. Not a good idea. You get spammed.

Has ebay changed policy?

I don't know about that - Several people have emailed me to point me at their car/product that is listed on ebay. This happened just recently with a Fiero that was in Waco
