Watch Those Butts..

Expensive litter: Tossed cigarette ignites SUV

SFGate.com ^ | Thursday, February 17, 2005 | Jaxon Van Derbeken

No ifs, ands or butts about it, Jonathan Fish learned an expensive lesson today about the dangers of littering.

The 20-year-old San Francisco resident was rolling across the upper deck of the Bay Bridge at 10:40 a.m., smoking a cigarette. When he got to Harrison Street, he rolled down the window of his white 2004 Ford Expedition SUV and tossed out the butt.

Instead of bounding along the pavement, however, the still-lit cigarette blew back in and set the interior of his $30,000 SUV ablaze

The lesson learned: Even aerodynamics says driving a large SUV in the financial district is a dumb idea Too bad it wasn't a H2 with 300 marker lights on it...that would be a shame

I think smokers found guilty of tossing their butts out littering the enviroment should be required to eat the butts of every cigarette they smoke for the next year.............or do jail time.

I actually heard here in Cali that a law is going through that if passed will make it illegal to throw cigg. butts out the window. However, im not so sure that that will be enforced too dramatically if it goes into effect....

That law would be welcomed by me. Enforcement would be a big issue though. Even if the state made $0.01 for every time that happened in LA alone we'd probably go tax free.

Awhile ago I saw a billboard that urged people not to throw their cigarette butts in the street and in the drains.....in Armenian.

I thought littering was already an offense in most places

It's already illegal. It's called littering.

I think the guy got exactly what he deserved. Karma's a b!tch, eh!

On more than one occasion, I've been driving behind people who have flicked their butts out the window, and the damn thing has landed right on my car! My response to this is usually lots of horn-blowing, light-flashing, and middle-finger-waving. Invariably, they just look around with a stupid look on their faces, wondering what I'm so upset about. Clueless morons.

Mike
