Thank you, Mr. Pissed Off Redneck
Screaming Zell is just what the Dems needed for a boost. Over and over today I am hearing how turned off people were by his speech. He hit a homerun with the Bush righties, which shows just where these people want to take us - to some bizarre world where we are supposed to worship an infallable president and intolerant viewpoints, instead of being educated participants in a democracy. Thank you Zell, for exposing the ugly fascist underbelly of the current Republican Party leadership, of which you are a part, you lying phony old redneck "Democrat".
![]() New Face Of The Republican Party Joseph Heller's Catch-22, the timeless war satire set in WWII. The Americans have recently captured Italy and a young American G.I. named Nately is visiting a whorehouse in liberated Palermo, Sicily, where he gets into a conversation with the ancient pimp: Old Pimp: "... I was a fascist when Mussolini was on top, and I am an anti-fascist now that he has been deposed. I was fanatically pro-German when the Germans were here to protect us against the Americans, and now that the Americans are here to protect us against the Germans I am fanatically pro-American. I can assure you, my outraged young friend" - the old man's knowing, disdainful eyes shown even more effervescently as Nately's stuttering dismay increased - "that you and your country will have no more loyal partisan in Italy than me - but only as long as you remain in Italy." "But," Nately cried out in disbelief, "you're a turncoat! A time-server! A shameful, unscrupulous opportunist!" Last edited by KirkVining; 09-02-2004 at 02:06 PM. |

Yes, now that the Jerry Falwells of this world seem to have a stranglehold on the GOP, I am officially denouncing my lifelong association. I am starting a new political party which I'm going to call the Hedonist Party. Anyone care to sign up? You can get in on the ground floor, so to speak.

He's my new hero
Senator Zell Miller fought back against Chris Matthews Wednesday night, leading to a very animated interview session when Matthews pounded away at points Miller made in his convention speech. "I wish I was over there where I could get a little closer up into your face," Miller yearned from a position inside Madison Square Garden while Matthews remained at MSNBC's outdoor set. Miller shot back at another point: "You're saying a bunch of baloney that didn't have anything to do with what I said up there on the rostrum." An angry Miller soon opined, "I wish we lived in the day where you could challenge a person to a duel,"

I listened to part of that speech this morning. I couldn't handle his rabid rhetoric, and shut it off. Why the hell hasn't he switched parties?
I agree he is a waste of the keynote speech, no undecided or Democrat is going to vote for Bush based on what that foaming-at-the-mouth facist has to say.

Miller must be working undercover for the DNC
Kevin Drum has links to commentators slamming Miller's tirade. My favorite is from somebody called Commentator Thumb: "Zell's speech reads better in the original German."
Here's Drum's list: ZELL MILLER ROUNDUP....Reaction to Zell Miller's temper tantrum last night has not been pretty: Eric Zorn has transcripts of Miller's just-short-of-clinically-insane interviews on MSNBC and CNN right after his speech. William Saletan goes nuclear: this is no longer just an ordinary election, he says, it's "becoming a referendum on democracy." NewDonkey: "Not since Pat Buchanan's famous 'culture war' speech in 1992 has a major speaker at a national political convention spoken so hatefully, at such length, about the opposition. At the dark heart of the speech was the same old tired litany of lies and mischaracterizations about Kerry's Senate votes on military spending and weapons systems that BC04 has been retailing for many months." From a time machine, Zell Miller himself criticizes his speech. Here's what he had to say in 2001: "John Kerry has fought against government waste and worked hard to bring some accountability to Washington....John has worked to strengthen our military." Andrew Sullivan: "[Miller's] speech tonight was in this vein, a classic Dixiecrat speech, jammed with bald lies, straw men, and hateful rhetoric....The man's speech was not merely crude; it added whole universes to the word crude." Jonathan Cohn in the New Republic: "It was one of the most vile political speeches in recent American history, every bit as offensive as Pat Buchanan's infamous call in 1992 for "religious war" and, perhaps, a little more disturbing. Buchanan's speech, after all, was an assault on decency. Last night Miller declared war on democracy." Matt Yglesias, who was in the hall when Miller spoke: "I don't believe I've ever heard a more disgusting speech delivered in the English language. The fact that I couldn't see a single person on the floor who seemed to feel anything less than the utmost enthusiasm for that lunacy was, well, a bit disturbing." Commenter Thumb, reacting to my pithy comment last night: "Zell's speech reads better in the original German." At times like this, I wish more people watched the conventions. If more of the country had seen Miller's ranting, cowardly attack last night, the election would probably be as good as over. —Kevin Drum 12:38 PM Permalink | TrackBack (9) | Comments (104) |

I am at a loss as to what the Republicans, usually the most media savvy, were trying to do. If they were trying to show undecided Democrats the way by trotting this guy out as some sort of Democrat who has figured things out and is now voting for Bush, they did the exact opposite. Instead the chorus shouts "Good Riddance you authoritarian flag wrapped psuedo-patriot intolerant bastard" while independents say, "Man, that Keynote Speaker was an authoritarian flag wrapped psuedo-patriot intolerant bastard". No better keynote could be asked for. After weeks of Swift Boat Bull, God drops a gift on John Kerry in the form of Yelling Yellow Zell.

I read the same quote back in 1996 after Pat Buchanan's speech at the 1996 RNC, so Mr. Thumb is ripping off somebody else... |
