Is this smily racist?

This smily is called "chinese".

It sort of strikes me the same as a smily in black-face makeup being called something like "sambo".

Just curious what your opinions are. Hopefully this won't inspire or .

Not so much racist, as it is a stereotypical cariacture (on the lines of some of the asian characters portrayed by Jerry Lewis)...

...I would say it's VERY politically uncorrect! But you would have to get a response from someone who is of Chinese descent to make that ruling.

For whatever it's worth, as an African American, I don't take offense to this nor this...

To add to the original statement, would a Native American find this offensive? How about a Mexican?

Or would Ross Perot be offended by this?

That's Ross Perot?? Geez, and here all this time I thought it was either Prince Charles or a Ferengi.

I saw that icon earlier and since I fit that description I can put my input in on it. I think it's VERY un-PC as well Other than that...when the heck would you use that icon in a conversation?

I'm 100% chinese and I think it looks amusing. I don't take offense to it at all.

Diametrical,

Yes, but does it bother you? Or are you above being easily offended?

If I were easily offended, I would be opposed to the German translation thread, as I am part German. But I am above getting easily offended...it's not worth the time, and besides most of the time the intent is amusement and not malicious. (besides to me, it is my opinion that matters most - everybody elses opinion is exactly that-their opinion )

The same goes for the caricatures....It is the INTENT that matters....Was it designed to hurt, or was it designed to stimulate the funny bone.

Being offended by a caricature is rather silly, if you want my "opinion" hehehe

(Hey! Maybe that is where some facts are born! If enough people have the same opinion, it suddenly transmogrifies into fact! woooah Dude!)

Reminds me of a song from the 60's about an Asian who was a spy.

I think it was called: Secret Asian Man

And don't any of you even dare even thinking about being offended, because that is one of my better puns!

I am not offended because this forum has a good people posting on it and therefore I am not worried about that. That caricature looks like Bugs Bunny anyhow I only get slightly irritated when asian people are referred to as "oriental" which is the wrong word. Oriental decribes carpets or furniture.... so that gets annoying. (Digression: watch The Big Lebowski a fantastic movie and pay attention to the beginning dialogue at the bowling alley ) Other than that I think the world has shed its stereotypes of asian and or Chinese people in general or at least I hope they have! And therefore with reference to the German thread I don't think it's necessary to get worked up about it either. I understand that it's amusement along with the native american headdress guy and the afro guy

By the way I am third generation (but have family in all areas of the world) so I am pretty much as melded in as it gets. I love beer boiled brats, cheese, lobster, steaks, mercedes and cars in general), guns, cars with guns and so on

People who are offended by a smily face need to get a life.

Maybe as an American this should offend me?

This one says it all.

That's a very loaded way to ask the question. However, I pretty much agree with your answer. There are bigger issues in life to worry about than an icon, plus they're all kind of cute.

Listen closer, Larry. It's SINGLE Asian Man. And as a former single man, I am outraged and offended.

It's all about caring about your fellow men, not an issue of the rights. Anyway, have a nice day.
That's how I see it. Within reason, if any particular phrase offends someone, I try to avoid using it. Nothing much offends me. I am offended when agitators come after friends and family, but not me so much. I am pretty thick-skinned.

Anyway, just wanted to give you a nod for making good points.

Don't forget the commonly misconcieved. "Hang on Sloopy" by the McCoys. I always thought it was Snoopy

cscmc1,

That's a good one too! May I borrow that for future use?

Diametrical,

I used to think it was Snoopy too!

Everyone: Y'all are a good bunch of people, and I am happy to see some unity in this thread
